Check if you’ve been part of an online data breach

INTERNET, SAFTY TIPS
data breach is a confirmed incident in which sensitive, confidential or otherwise protected data has been accessed and/or disclosed in an unauthorized fashion. Data breaches may involve personal health information (PHI), personally identifiable information (PII), trade secrets or intellectual property.
Forget about those hackers in movies trying to crack the code on someone’s computer to get their top-secret files. The hackers responsible for data breaches start by targeting companies, not specific individuals. They want to get data from as many people as possible so they can use, resell, or leverage it to make money. It all starts with getting your password.

You can’t stop hackers from hacking. But you can avoid bad habits that make their work easy.

Check if you’ve been part of an online data breach

All types of data can be valuable.

Some data — like banking information, bank card numbers, government-issued ID numbers, and PIN numbers — is valuable because it can be used to steal the victim’s identity or withdraw money. Email addresses and passwords are also valuable because hackers can try them on other accounts. All sorts of data can be valuable in some way because it can be sold on the dark web for a profit.

What makes a password easy to guess.

If hackers can get a list of email addresses from a data breach, they already have a good start. All they have to do is pick their website of choice and try these emails with the most popular passwords. Chances are, they’ll be able to get into quite a few accounts. So don’t use any of these 100 Worst Passwords of 2018.

  • 123456 and password are the most commonly used passwords. Don’t use them.
  • Switching a letter for a symbol (p@ssw0rd!) is an obvious trick hackers know well.
  • Avoid favorite sports teams or pop culture references. Use something more obscure.
  • Don’t use a single word like sunshine, monkey, or football. Using a phrase or sentence as your password is stronger.
  • Don’t use common number patterns like 111111, abc123, or 654321.
  • Adding a number or piece of punctuation at the end doesn’t make your password stronger.

One exposed password can unlock many accounts.

Hackers know people reuse the same passwords. If your banking password is the same as your email password is the same as your Amazon password, a single vulnerability in one site can put the others at risk.

It’s why you should use different passwords for every single account. The average person has 90 accounts, and that’s a lot of passwords to remember. Security experts recommend using a password manager to safely store unique passwords for every site.

Hackers don’t care how much money you have.

Think you don’t need to worry because you don’t have much money to steal? Hackers couldn’t care less. There are countless ways to leverage all types of personal data for profit.

Through identity theft, cyber criminals can open new credit cards or apply for loans in your name. By getting your financial information, they can make purchases or withdrawals. These attackers can even find ways to target your friends and family once they gain access to your email.

VPN a must to know?

INTERNET, PROXY, SECURITY
Virtual Private Network

The acronym VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. As the name implies, it provides users with a virtual network that is private so that they can connect to the internet in a way that is safe and secure. Essentially, the ultimate goal of a VPN is to keep your private information private.

We highly recommend you read this article for a more in-depth explanation of a what a VPN is before you read this one, but here’s a short primer in any case.

How a VPN works

A VPN works by routing your device’s internet connection through your chosen VPN’s private server rather than your internet service provider (ISP) so that when your data is transmitted to the internet, it comes from the VPN rather than your computer. The VPN acts as an intermediary of sorts as you connect to the internet, thereby hiding your IP address – the string of numbers your ISP assigns your device – and protecting your identity. Furthermore, if your data is somehow intercepted, it will be unreadable until it reaches its final destination.

A VPN creates a private “tunnel” from your device to the internet and hides your vital data through something that is known as encryption.

how vpn works
How-vpn-works

The basics of VPN encryption

Encryption is the term used to describe how your data is kept private when using a VPN.

Encryption hides information in such a way (basically transforming it to gibberish) that it cannot be read without a very strong password, which is known as a key. This key essentially breaks the complicated code that your data has been turned into. Only your computer and the VPN server know this key. The process of decoding your data is known as decryption, which is the process of making encrypted information readable again through the application of the key.

As an everyday example, when you enter your credit card details into a shopping website, that information is encrypted and rendered unreadable until it reaches its end destination.

Different VPN services use different kinds of encryption processes, but put simply, the VPN encryption process goes something like this:

  1. When you connect to a VPN, it is through a secure tunnel where your data is encoded. This means that your data is transformed into an unreadable code as it travels between your computer and the server of the VPN.
  2. Your device is now seen as being on the same local network as your VPN. So your IP address will actually be the IP address of one of your VPN Provider’s servers.
  3. You may browse the internet as you please, safe in the knowledge that the VPN acts as a barrier, protecting your personal information.

How effectively your data is encrypted is dependent on the protocols of your VPN provider’s encryption mechanism, which we will talk more about later.

VPN Types

How much or how little your VPN affects your device will be dependent on the kind of software you opt for.

Many VPNs will work directly with the settings of an operating system – such as Windows, Mac OS, iOS, or Android – so that every app that connects to the internet – such as browsers, banking, or social media apps – are protected.

Standalone VPN Services

This is the VPN most commonly used by homes and small businesses, and it’s the type offered by Namecheap. It uses an application that creates an encrypted connection to the private network that you can then utilize to connect to the internet at large.

Browser Extensions

Some VPNs work as a browser add-on. There are a plethora of add-ons you can install to browsers like Google Chrome or Firefox, while Opera comes with a built-in VPN. The downside of this is that your data will only be protected when you’re specifically using that browser. Other apps will not be protected. Furthermore, browser VPNs tend to be a little more vulnerable and IP leaks can occur.

If you do decide to opt for a browser add-on or extension, it’s best to stick to reputable companies that offer other VPN services, too. There are a lot of shady browser add-ons out there, avoid a scammy, data harvester by reading reviews and always reading the fine print of its terms of service.

Router VPN

Another way to implement a VPN is through a VPN-enabled router. This is ideal if you have several devices you want to protect as it will protect every device connected to the router, saving you having to install the VPN individually. Furthermore, you’ll only need to sign in once; your router will always be connected to your VPN.

Connecting your router to a VPN isn’t as difficult as you may think. First of all, you’ll need to sign up for a VPN service then you’ll need a router. The most convenient kind of router to get is one that is designed to support VPNs right away, without you having to do anything more technical that entering your VPN details. These routers can be slightly more expensive than regular routers, but the convenience is worth it.

Corporate VPN

Organizations often use a remote-access VPN for employees who work remotely. Through this VPN employees can securely access the company’s private intranet, often by using a password and an app. This is a custom-created solution that requires personalized development and heavy IT resources.

So we’ve discussed how a VPN works and some different ways to implement a VPN, but why exactly should you use a VPN?

What does a VPN do for you?

Most people will probably agree that the basic tenets of a VPN are a good thing. Here at Namecheap, we think that internet privacy is more than just a good thing – it’s vital to the success of the online world. That said, many people delay getting a VPN, considering it inessential or, worse, unnecessary. They shouldn’t.

A good way of illustrating the necessity of a VPN is to show just how exposed you are when your internet connection is not encrypted.

How data is transferred with and without a VPN

From shopping and paying bills to banking, so many everyday acts are rapidly moving online. As a result, we’re transmitting very important information, such as credit card details and social security numbers, day in, day out.

By not using a VPN, you’re not quite shouting your most sensitive information from the rooftops, but it is a little like leaving your front door open with your personal information conveniently laid out on a table right inside the door. Maybe you have good, honest neighbors that won’t come in and take what is valuable. It’s natural to want to believe in the goodness of our neighbors. That said, there’s a likelihood that one or two of those neighbors will have a more malicious intent. And even if there isn’t, do you really want to take that risk by not closing your door and locking it tight?

Think of the internet as a neighborhood, except instead of houses, there is a collection of servers. These servers store the internet’s countless websites and communicate with each other constantly and have access to your data as you browse the internet. You may not care about some of this data, but you should certainly be worried about more sensitive data like your online banking details.

You might think that HTTPS does the job, but it’s ok.

For the uninitiated, HTTPS secures information communicated between a person’s web browser and a website. It is indicated in green the browser address bar and also by a padlock icon. While this does indeed provide added security while web browsing, your data will still be vulnerable, particularly if you’re using public Wi-Fi. Going back to our house analogy, it’s a bit like closing your front door but failing to lock it. It’s better than keeping your front door open, sure, but security definitely could be tighter.

Whether you’re connected to the internet in public or at home, without a VPN you are exposed to a myriad of vulnerabilities. When you’re browsing at home, your ISP can see everything you do and is probably logging it. Places with public WiFi hotspots, such as coffee spots and airports, are very vulnerable to hackers who can easily set up fake but convincing hotspots.

On the other hand, when you use a VPN, your data is not exposed. The origin of your data will be your VPN server. By using a VPN your online actions will not be tracked and logged by ISPs and unsavory hackers, nor will sensitive information be taken. Even if data is intercepted, it is encrypted, so it looks like nonsense to anyone without a decryption key.

Common reasons for using a VPN

People use VPNs for countless reasons. Some of these reasons are specific, while some people just have a VPN as another layer of security in addition to a good antivirus program and practicing generally sensible internet usage.

  • As previously mentioned, a common reason to use a VPN is to prevent anyone – from ISPs to public Wi-Fi hotspots– from tracking what you’re doing online.
  • Another reason many like to use a VPN is to gain access to region-restricted content, whether that be a TV show on your country’s Netflix, or to get around a certain jurisdiction’s internet censorship laws.

Ultimately, why people use a VPN is to have greater anonymity online. In a day and age where revelations of public data being used in shady ways have become a daily occurrence, keeping private information private is more vital than ever.

How secure is a VPN really?

Like with any online software or service, the security of a VPN will be reliant on a number of factors. In the case of VPNs, these factors include:

  • The kind of technology the provider uses
  • The laws of your jurisdiction

Let’s start by taking a look at the different kinds of VPN protocols available right now.

VPN protocols

A VPN protocol is basically the technology your VPN service uses to ensure you get the fastest and safest possible connection to the internet. Combining encryption standards and transmission protocols, a VPN protocol determines how your data is transmitted between your device and the VPN server.

The main VPN protocols in use today are:

  • Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)Created by Microsoft, this is one of the oldest protocols used on the internet today. As such, it’s only really useful if you are using it on an older Windows operating system, though it is fast and easy to deploy. However, if a VPN service offers just this, it isn’t recommended.
  • Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP/IPSec)This protocol is a combination of the previously mentioned PPTP and the L2F protocol by networking hardware company, Cisco Systems. It creates a more secure data tunnel than PPTP, but doesn’t actually have encryption or privacy capabilities. As such, it is often bundled with IPSec, which is a security protocol.
  • Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP)Another VPN created by Microsoft, this is the VPN equivalent of the protocols used by websites for encryption purposes. A very secure protocol, only the two parties involved in the transmission of data can decode it.
  • Internet Key Exchange, version 2 (IKEv2)A newer, more secure version of L2TP, IKEv2 was also born from a collaboration between Microsoft and Cisco. Like it’s predecessor, it is often bundled with IPSec. This protocol is particularly effective on mobile devices.
  • OpenVPNOpenVPN is an open source VPN technology and is widely seen as the best around. Don’t let the term “open source” put you off, all that means is that countless developers are constantly improving the technology, and anyone can use it and modify it to their needs, whether that be individuals or companies. Its effectiveness has been put to the test numerous time through high-profile audits. OpenVPN is one of the most popular protocols and is considered the most secure, offering the same protection as the previously mentioned protocols, but on a greater scale.

Before deciding on what VPN provider to go for, it’s a good idea to see what protocols they offer and if they suit what you will be using your VPN for.

The law and VPNS

The security of your VPN may very well depend on the laws of country you’re residing in, or the laws of the country where your VPN’s server and company headquarters are located. This is because the laws of a particular country will affect how you are allowed to use VPN technology and how different companies are permitted to use VPN technology.

Because the laws surrounding VPN usage are still somewhat new and still evolving, they can be interpreted in innumerable ways. If you are located in North America and western Europe, VPN use is generally permitted. VPN usage is a somewhat gray area in many countries, such as China, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Russia. While VPN use is not outright illegal in some of these countries, VPN use is restricted.

For instance, in China, it is illegal for businesses to use a VPN without a license and it is illegal for businesses to offer VPNs without a license. In Russia and Iran, only government-approved VPNs are allowed to be used. In United Arab Emirates if you are found to have fraudulent IP address you could be fined or jailed. VPN use is banned completely in Belarus, North Korea, Iraq, and Turkmenistan.

If you reside in a country where the law around VPN use is unclear, even if you’re not necessarily accessing content that is frowned upon or illegal, the act of using a VPN in itself could get you into a lot of trouble.

Depending on the country a VPN provider is located in, the company may be legally required to keep logs of your internet usage. They may also keep a record of your payments. This means that even though you have been using a VPN, your data is still being stored and could even be used for reasons you did not approve of later on.

Avoid this by always reading the fine print in your VPN’s Terms of Service. A VPN may wax lyrical about providing you with the ultimate secure internet browsing experience, but it’s better to be certain than to go just by their word.

As well as that, a good rule of thumb is to opt for a paid VPN rather than a free option. While many free VPNs can change your geolocation, few offer proper data encryption and data logging is common, with companies often selling your data to third parties.

Key considerations before choosing a VPN

Hopefully, you now have a better idea of how a VPN works. Before we send you on your merry way, here’s a checklist of things to look out for before you choose a VPN:

  • Is it free or paid? – When it comes to a secure, speedy service, it really is worth it to pay for a VPN. Many free VPNs tend to offer only the PPTP protocol which, as we said earlier, really isn’t very effective these days. They have fewer server locations and less bandwidth to offer. Very often with these free options your data is tracked and sold to third-party businesses. Paid VPN options more often than not have more powerful security protocols on offer than their free counterparts. A good paid VPN should have more server locations and more bandwidth, providing you with a faster service. They will also have customer support on hand if you run into any issues.
  • Are VPNs legal in your jurisdiction?
  • Where is the VPN server located?
  • Does the company log your activity?
  • Does it protect your whole device or is it just an add-on?
  • What are the protocols of the VPN’s encryption mechanism?
  • The number of servers and amount of bandwidth a VPN service has – if both are low it could make for a very slow web-surfing experience.

Ad Inserter can be configured to insert any code anywhere on the page. Each code with it’s settings is called a code block. Free Ad Inserter supports 16 code blocks, Ad Inserter Pro supports up to 96 code blocks (depending on the license type). The settings page is divided into tabs – 16 code blocks and general plugin settings. Black number means inactive code block (code is not inserted anywhere), red number means block is using automatic insertion, blue number means block is using manual insertion while violet number means block is using automatic and manual insertion.

Check Code Editing for detailed description of code editor, code tools, banner code generator, AdSense codes and ad rotation.

Settings

Each code block has 4 independent insertion options:

  • Automatic Insertion (before/after paragraph in all posts,…)
  • Widget (for widget positions)
  • Shortcode (for manual insertion in posts or pages)
  • PHP function call (to insert code blocks at any position in theme PHP files)

To rename code block click on the block name. To insert code block (and display ad) at some position you need to enable and use at least one insertion option.

Automatic Insertion

Automatic insertion means that the code block will be automatically inserted on all posts or pages according to the block settings. For each code block you can also define individual exceptions to prevent insertions on some posts or pages. There are at least two different ways to exclude posts or pages – check individual exceptions for more.

8 Best Search Engines on Internet

INTERNET, Search Engine

We use Search Engines on Internet to search the world’s information, including webpages, images, videos and more. Search can be quick and often broadly effective, but will not always find everything you need. Dogpile Search Engine makes searching the Web easy, because it has all the best search engines piled into one. It is very safe for family and kids because very strict in search results. Dogpile is a metasearch engine, meaning that it gets results from multiple search engines and directories and then presents them combined to the user. Users will see Arfie on the front page. The homepage is relatively clean and uncluttered, with a good choice of colors. The search bar is squarely in the middle of the home page, with textual tab choices right on top of that. Below Arfie, there are links to the Toolbar, Joke of the Day, SearchSpy, a way to view either family-friendly or unfiltered real-time Web searches, Maps, Weather and an option to add Dogpile Search to your site.

There’s also Favorite Fetches, with what looks to be the top six most searched for queries at any one time, although this list didn’t seem to be completely accurate (dog flu is a most searched for query?). You might find Arfie’s Most Wanted to be a better indicator of what was being searched for by the most people.

Searching with Dogpile

A test search brought back results with combined results from the various search engines and directories that Dogpile pulls from, but there is another column to the right with the question “Are You Looking For…” that had much better search queries and subsequently better results.

Users will notice buttons at the top of their search results, including “Best of All Search Engines”, “Google”, “Yahoo Search”, “MSN Search”, etc. Click on any of those buttons and search results will now highlight items that are specifically from that search engine in a column to the right.

Image Search

Dogpile’s Image Search brought back good results, including better search query suggestions.

Audio and Video Search

Audio Search test searches receive results from Yahoo Search, SingingFish, and more. Most of these audio results have a quick thirty-second preview, but quite a few of them were available full-length. The Video Search is also powered by Yahoo Search, SingingFish, and more, and was similar to the Audio Search in previews and full-length results.

News Search

News Search is sortable by relevance and date, with search results returned from sources as varied as Fox News, ABC News, and Topix. The Yellow and White Pages searches are standard, with fields to search by business name, individual name, etc. Throughout all these various searches (except for the Yellow and White Pages), the ubiquitous “Are You Looking For” feature is always there, steering users to better-worded search queries.

Meta Search Features

Dogpile’s Comparison Engines demo is a friendly introduction to how metasearch engines work, with a real-time Venn diagram to demonstrate how three different search engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN), retrieve results, and how few of them actually do overlap.

Advanced Search gives users the option to narrow your searches by exact word phrases, language filters, date, domain filters, or adult filters. There is also have the option to set search preferences, with the ability to customize default search settings.

Dogpile: A Useful Search Engine

The ability to search several big search engines and directories at the same time is not only a time-saver, but it’s useful to compare results. One of the best features of Dogpile is the search suggestions because the Suggestions can be quite a lot better than what the average searcher can come up with.

Quora Search It is different

INTERNET, Search Engine

Quora is a question-and-answer site where questions are asked, answered, edited and organized by its community of users. Its publisher, Quora, Inc., is based in Mountain View, California. The company was founded in June 2009, and the website was made available to the public on June 21, 2010. Users can collaborate by editing questions and suggesting edits to answers that have been submitted by other users.

Anonymity

Anonymity on Quora can only be used to anonymously add questions or answers. This means you are not able to do any of the following actions anonymously:

  • Upvote
  • Comment
  • Send answer requests
  • Merge questions
  • Suggest Edits
  • Edit answer wikis
  • Revert edit log operations
  • Edit a question that you didn’t ask (including the question, its details, or topics)

After you write an answer, you cannot remove or add anonymity after it’s been posted. This means that if you add your answer anonymously, it will always be anonymous, and if you add your answer publicly, it will always be public. To switch the privacy of the answer, you’ll need to delete it and re-post it.

Quora has several different ways of letting you mark and remember different kinds of things. And the methods seem to change frequently. At one time Questions could be saved for later, now it’s only Answers, and so on. You can’t save Comments at all.

Bookmark

The easiest and most effective way to bookmark anything on Quora is to use the bookmarking feature of your browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.) or an external bookmark service such as Diigo. You can create different organization schemes with folders and/or tags, and there is usually a sync feature with backup to the cloud so you won’t lose the links if you change computers.

Question Answered

One of the great parts of Quora is having a question answered by the perfect person, like a former Navy pilot who can explain what it’s like to land on an aircraft carrier, or a television screenwriter sharing the critical ingredients of a TV sitcom. However, when you have a specific question, you may not know the best people on Quora who can answer.

Request Answers is a way to connect people with questions to people who can answer them.

On a question, you’ll see suggestions for Request Answers, a list of people on Quora who can best answer a particular question.

Asking someone to answer sends them an email and a notification with the request, and they can choose to answer or pass on your request.

Since the system automatically saves from an open window, if you have two windows opened, or if you open a window after you’ve written something, it will save the content from whatever window is opened. You’ve got to be very careful when you have a second window opened. I’ve lost content a few times not realizing what had happened.

GOOGLE, INTERNET, Search Engine

Google Search most popular and big search engine on the internet.  Search the world’s information, including webpages, images, videos and more. A basic Google search can be quick and often broadly effective, but will not always find everything you need. • Weather – The weather conditions, temperature, wind, humidity, and forecast, for many cities can be viewed by typing “weather” along with a city for larger cities or city and state, U.S. zip code, or city and country for smaller cities (such as: weather Lawrence, Kansas; weather Paris; weather Bremen, Germany).

  • Time – The current time in many cities (worldwide)[10] can be viewed by typing “time” and the name of the city (such as: time Cairo; time Pratt, KS).

Search results for the formula are displayed after the calculation result. The caret “^” raises a number to an exponent power, and percentages are allowed (“40% of 300”).
  • Numeric ranges – A set of numbers can be matched by using a double-dot between range numbers (70..73 or 90..100) to match any positive number in the range, inclusive. Negative numbers are treated as using exclusion-dash to not match the number.
  • Dictionary lookup – A definition for a word or phrase can be found, by entering “define” followed by a colon and the word(s) to look up (such as, “define:philosophy”, maybe works for signed in users only)

Yandex the best search engine for Russia and China

INTERNET, Search Engine

Yandex is a powerful search engine that’s capable of finding the most appropriate information on the internet for your search. Yandex Panoramas Yandex is a Russian multinational technology company specializing in Internet-related services and products. It is Russia’s biggest technology company.

Start searching, it’s easy!

You don’t need to know any special search commands to use Yandex. Simply type a question in the same way you would ask a librarian or a geeky professor. For example, [what time is it?], [What is the brightest star in the northern hemisphere] or [contextual advertising on Yandex].

What’s the best way to search?

It’s best to search using several words, as it’s often hard to understand exactly what you’re looking for from a single word. For example, a search for [design] may mean you’re looking for interior design, web-design, or even landscape design! So for searches like this Yandex will find pages for all types of design.

Yandex is good at understanding and interpreting searches made up of several words. It knows when to search pages where the words are located next to each other, and when it’s sufficient to come across the words separately on the same document or webpage. In both instances Yandex will find the information that matches your search the closest. Yandex lets you take full control so be “clever” when using when creating your search.

Looking for a quote?

If you want to find a specific quote, simply put the phrase in quotation marks: [“for never was a story of more woe”]. A search phrased like this will find all the pages with the quote you require.

Looking for a specific name?

Words with capital and small letters are considered separate forms of the same word, therefore it doesn’t matter whether or not you capitalize words in the search, with the following exception. A search for [!meadows] will find all documents containing this word form (plural) irrespective of capitalization. A search for [!Meadows] will find documents or webpages where the first letter is capitalized. This is particularly useful when the common noun is the same as the pronoun, for example, [village, !Cats].

Find this specific word!

In order to ensure a specific word is included in your search (Yandex may not include all the words in your search), place a plus sign in front of it (without a space). Therefore, if you are looking for a quote from “Hamlet” you can search for [+to +be +or +not +to +be].

Here’s a little tip: you can achieve the same result by placing all the “necessary” words in quotation marks: [“to be, or not to be”].

Want to exclude a word?

Place a minus sign (without a space) in front of any words you wish to exclude from your search. For example, if you need a guide to Paris and don’t want a long list of travel agents your search should be something like this: [Paris guide -travel -agents]. Please note that any words you wish to exclude should be at the end of the search.

Enjoy! Yandex the best search engine

Bing the best search engine for Russia and China

INTERNET, MICROSOFT, Search Engine

Bing the best search engine for Russia and China alternative for Google Search which is blocked there. Bing is a web search engine owned and operated by Microsoft. The service has its origins in Microsoft’s previous search engines: MSN Search, Windows Live Search and later Live Search. Bing as you probably already know is a search engine offering from Microsoft. While people believed and still believe that it is difficult to topple Google as the dominant search engine, the Bing search engine has been gaining ground and offering on the edge functionality. So much so that many believe that the recent sidebar and ability to add background images by Google has been motivated by the popularity of such features on Bing.

As for the quality of search, the results are comparable if not better than Google’s results in most cases. In any case, you can certainly expect Bing to stay around for quite some time unlike other search engines that have tried to challenge Google.

Bing Image Match

Google has had this feature for years, but Microsoft has finally decided to integrate it into its own search engine. If you find an image on the web or have an image on your PC that you would like to “re-find” on the internet, you can use Image Match to do so.

Let us say that you have a small image that you found on the internet a while back, you could now use Bing Image Match to find a larger and high-resolution copy of that same exact image. No playing around with search key words or Boolean logic – just point Bing to your picture and you are set.

To use Bing image Match, simply head over to Bing.com and click on the “Images” tab. Then, next to the search box, you will see a button that says “Image Match”. You can either upload a file directly from your PC or paste in an existing image URL to start the search.

Bing Computations

I personally have a disdain for mathematics, which is why I love to use Bing search to perform computations. Simply head over to Bing and type in your math query to see instant results

You can type in simple equations such as “100 / 5” or “100 divided by 5” to get super-fast answers right inside Bing. The search engine now also provides a calculator that you can use to change around your math problem – not to mention, it is touch friendly.

If you type something a bit more complex into Bing such as an equation like “y=2x+1”, then you will be provided a link to instantly redirect to Wolfram Alpha; the service will be able to plot your equation and provide other data surround the input.

Bing Video Hover

While Google may have had an edge up with image search functionality, Bing is still the king when it comes to searching video content.

At times, while searching for videos on the web, it can be difficult to know if you are about to click on the correct video or a copycat. Bing eliminates any uncertainty you might have by allowing you to hover over any video and preview a short clip of it.

If you are worried about accidently playing a “naughty video”, do not worry – Bing video hover disables itself and blurs any questionable content.

In addition, when you play a video from a Bing search result, it will pop up within the page instead of taking you directly to the site. Not only does this provide an easy way to get back to your search results, but it also saves bandwidth by not needing to load an entirely new page each time.

Bing Timeline

How many times do you want to look up a famous individual? Would it not be more convenient if when you searched “Henry Ford” a timeline automatically appeared with key events throughout his lifetime? With Bing Timeline – it does.

Simply head over to Bing and perform a search for “influential or famous people” and you should be provided with a Timeline for said person. In addition, to the timeline that is displayed, you receive important stats up front including the person’s lifespan, family, and companies/organizations they may have founded.

If your son or daughter (or yourself) has an upcoming school research project, using Bing’s Timeline feature is a great way to get them going in the right direction.

Bing Snapshot

Sometimes, you want to get information before you even hit the search button. Companies have tried various ways to accomplish this, such as Google’s instant results that searches and updates the page as you type. When Google released this feature many Bing users wanted something similar, so Bing came up with their own solution – Bing Snapshot.

Bing Snapshot keeps everything a bit neater; instead of receiving entire search results for “Volca” when you are trying to search for “Volcano”, the features provides bits of information within the suggested search bar.

If you are performing a search for “Bill Gates”, Bing will automatically provide you with a small “snapshot” of basic information that you can then click on to explore more about your query. Snapshots also include quick links to points of interest, such as news, imagery, biographies, quotes, etc.

Bing Saves

Here is a feature that most of you will not know about, but do not worry – it is because it is still in beta. Bing Saves is a new idea that the Bing team at Microsoft is testing out to provide easy bookmarking.

Instead of saving your favorite bookmarks locally, you can keep them saved safe up in the cloud. To check out the new beta feature simply head to Bing.com/saves. From there, you will be able to pin a link to your favorite toolbar that will enable the ability for you to click and save a link directly to Bing. Your bookmarks can then be seen by visiting the Bing Saves section.

We are not sure exactly how useful this feature is, as most browsers including Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Firefox already have cloud backups for bookmarks. That being said, maybe you can find an excellent use for the feature.

EDUCATION, ENTERTAINMENT, Search Engine

Baidu search engine is the best and very simple search engine  very famous in China. Baidu was established in 2000 by Robin Li and Eric Xu. … Baidu has the 2nd largest search engine in the world, and held a 76.05% market share in China’s search engines market, the largest in the world, as of April 2017. In December 2007, Baidu became the first Chinese company to be included in the NASDAQ-100 index.

On top of that, Baidu’s share has consistently grown in recent months, Net Marketshare data indicates. For instance, back in March, its share was rated at 16.77 percent. Fast forward to June, and that number has risen, without any drops in between, to 18.03. That’s a growth rate of almost 1.3 percent from March to June – not bad at all, considering that Baidu’s competition consists of some of the biggest tech and web companies in the history of the world. Plus, their U.S. penetration is likely close to nil at this point.

Though Baidu is the search engine of choice for many Chinese people, the company has made moves to woo the interest of English speaking developers. Back in 2013, Baidu launched an English-language site tailored towards devs. They have even hired people away from Google, like Andrew Ng, the company’s former head of artificial intelligence.

Though Google’s search engine share easily trumps Baidu’s at this point, could we someday be saying “Baidu it,” instead?

How to Make a WordPress Website step-by-step

WEBSITE, WORDPRESS

WordPress is a number one best and simple web platform for the beginners who want to start a website for personal or business. Creating a website is as simple as creating Facebook nowadays. An easy step-by-step website setup guide written by web developers who have created hundreds of websites and helped thousands of others to create their own website.

A step by step tutorial – we start off with finding the right content management system, choosing a domain name, then the right web hosting service, adding the right themes, plugins and customizing your site’s appearance. By the time you are done with this how to make a WordPress website for beginners guide you’ll have a full fledged website ready to go!

What is a Content Management System?

A content management system (CMS) in simple terms, is a platform of sorts or a mechanism which permits you to create your content and publish it on a website. Let’s say that it is a coat hanger stand with the coat being your content.

It is software that is installed on your host’s server. Your host provider will likely have a one click installation process to help you get your CMS installed. Once it is installed, you can log in to your site as the admin and add photos, text and other content. You can use the content you’ve added to create blog posts and other forms of content like a product page or display a work portfolio on your website.

A CMS is way more than just a means to an end, you can install a theme which is a modified template to suit the specific niche and purpose of your site. With the template added, you can customize the appearance of your site. You can add plugins to add function to your site, for example a social sharing plugin to help spread the word about your site via social networks.

All of this and more can be accomplished with a Content Management System.

Which CMS is best for you?

An overwhelming majority of websites use WordPress. The other two options that lag way behind in comparison to WordPress (certainly in popularity) are Joomla and Drupal.

WordPress

The ideal option for someone who’s creating his or her first website. It has considerable scalability and works well with low and medium traffic websites. We receive 1.5 million views every month and we run WordPress, so that gives you an idea of what medium traffic constitutes if you were wondering. Even large websites such as TIME Magazine, CNN, TED, Techcrunch, NBC and others use WordPress to server millions of pageviews each day.

WordPress has a great number of points that can be made in favor of its use.

  • Easy To Install: Most hosting services have one click installation options for WordPress given the number of people who use it.
  • Strong Community & Open Source: It is free and used by a lot of people. There are a plethora of free themes and plugins that you can leverage for your site. Apart from the freebies, premium themes and plugins are cheap and come with excellent support services from their providers. If you ever have a doubt or a problem a simple Google search can answer your query. If fact, I’ll go so far as to say you’ll find the answer to your doubts answered by the first three results of a Google search. A strong community will aid in your WordPress initiation process should you ever encounter any hiccups. And you can always drop your comments here either Aigars or me will be sure to respond to the at the earliest opportunity.
  • Ideal For Non tech savvy online entrepreneurs: Most of the products associated with WordPress, such as themes and plugins are fairly straightforward and intuitive to use. Installing a Content Management System like WordPress is only the first step of the process, there is much more to website creation beyond that. Like WordPress which is easy to install and configure, the tools that you’ll require to make your website whole are easy to handle.

Two not so quite favorable things about WordPress

  • One drawback of WordPress, it may become unwieldy if your site grows far too large and receives an enormous amount of daily traffic. The cost of your hosting goes up. But we are talking about traffic in the order of millions here and it isn’t something you should let bother you for now.
  • Another potential problem is the quality of free plugins and themes. While most are good and have fairly high security standards, you’d should be wary of unknown third party plugins. WordPress is a secure platform out the box, but adding third party software while exercising poor judgement is a bad idea. That being said security vulnerabilities are generally fixed as soon as they are detected.
  • As you can see WordPress is by far the most popular content management system and is used by 65% CMS powered websites worldwide. The thing you need to know is all CMSs have one drawback or the other. And for a new web admin, WordPress is the best way to go! But I’ll talk about Drupal and Joomla, all the same. You should certainly be aware of them, should you decide to switch your CMS at a later point in time. And it will also tell you why perhaps Joomla and Drupal are not best suited to the needs of beginner.

    Drupal

Unlike WordPress, Drupal is not too well suited for the technically inept or a first time website developer. Drupal is an open source CMS and is largely utilized by big corporations with vast websites and high traffic loads. It has its own customization possibilities with themes and plugins created to add value to Drupal sites. Drupal websites are a bit faster and little less taxing on the host’s server resources.

But if you’re new to web development, it isn’t for you. Why? It is more complicated than it needs to be to meet your requirements. It is designed for complex, vast websites with high traffic loads, which your new website will not be to begin with. Given that, there is no need to add to the difficulty of the website creation process unnecessarily.  And besides, you can always switch to Drupal at a later date.

    Joomla

Open source and free like the previous two platforms. It is a tad better than the other two when it comes to creating a community of users (like a small social network or tight knit community for your readers) and is far more amenable to creating social websites with a lot of interaction and engagement from users. It is easier to handle than Drupal and offers more than WordPress in terms of performance and tweakability.

And again my reasons are the same for not recommending it for you, unnecessary complication that you do not need.

WordPress – Probably the best option for you!

If you are starting off with a new domain name with no traffic so to speak of, you are better off with WordPress. It is exceedingly easy to use, it is free and comes with an enormous number of premium quality free themes and plugins. The cost of hosting is low and many hosts provide for easy one click installation of WordPress. And since a growing percentage of online entrepreneurs do not know how to program in HTML, CSS and PHP, WordPress is the best choice as it offers excellent customizability even to WordPress newbies.

  • Now that you have chosen the best platform for your website you can proceed with the next step.

Before you choose a domain name, you’ll need be sure of the niche you’d like to concentrate on. Selecting a niche area to focus on, is an important task in and of itself. To create a revenue generating website it is critical that you research the target keyword pool and the niche it is derived from. For the time being, just make sure it is something you like and are genuinely passionate about. And ensure that you have reasonable expertise in the subject matter involved.

You can literally register any available (not registered yet) domain name but here is something I recommend:

  • Business website – If you are making a website for your business it would be best to choose a domain name that is your company name or brand. An example domain name would be YourComapanyName.com or YourBrandName.com
  • Personal website – If it is going to be your personal website it would be great to go with com
  • Hobby website – The sky’s the limit 🙂

Most popular domain names extensions (the end part of website address, like .com) are .com, .org, .net, but in recent years a huge amount of new domain extensions have been introduced (Wikipedia). Now you can register crazy domain names such as

YourCompanyName.pizza, YourCompanyName.green, or YourName.ninja.

However, for your first website I recommend to stick with .com, .net and .org. New domain extensions haven’t gone mainstream yet and might confuse your visitors. Even some social networks, services and apps have problems displaying these new domain names that’s why I advice to avoid them, at least for now.

Choosing The Right Domain Name

The next step in our process involves choosing a domain name. A domain name is basically the URL one types into a browser’s address bar to visit a particular website.

Getting the right domain name is crucial. A few things you need to keep in mind while considering domain name choices.

  • Short – Shorter names work better when it comes to remembrance and are easy to type as well.
  • Brandable – Remember your domain also runs to your brand, make sure it isn’t memorable for all the wrong reasons.
  • Memorable – People forget easily, come up with a name that first time visitors to your site are likely to remember.
  • Catchy – You want a domain name that rolls off the tongue and describes what you do.
  • Easy to type.
  • Includes keyword (optional) – Identify the right keywords or combination of keywords. The closer your domain name is to your site’s niche, the better for search engine optimization (SEO)
  • Niche specific (optional) – If you are writing a website about a specific niche check if there are popular abbreviations that you can use. For example, in WordPress there are many highly ranked websites with “wp” as part of their name. WPEngine.com, a managed hosting service for WordPress.

Funny domain name mistakes

Here are some domain names someone have registered without realizing what a huge mistake they have made:

  • Speedofart.com – Speed of Art
  • Choosespain.com – Choose Spain
  • Gotahoe.com – Go Tahoe

Hosting

You really have two options when it comes to hosting provider types recommended for WordPress newbies.

  • Shared Hosting
  • Managed WordPress Hosting

I do not recommend anything other than a shared hosting plan for first time webmasters. All other forms of hosting that you may have heard of like Virtual Private Hosting (requires reasonable technical know how), managed WordPress hosting (too costly) might not be the right choice for your first website. As your knowledge and business grows you might consider VPS or fully managed WordPress hosting but let’s leave that for another post.

Shared hosting is the way to go and later we can talk about upgrading your host. We’ve recommended two shared hosting services and have also added elaborate installation processes for WordPress with both of them. Both hosting providers offers domain registration and website hosting and that’s exactly what we need to create an awesome website.

NameCheap Host

To make WordPress installation process easier we have created a short video that will guide you through installation process.

Click here to visit NameCheap and proceed with your first website setup.

If you had some problems understanding setup process outlined in video you can follow steps below.

  1. Choose the right hosting page. I’d suggest the starter package. It offers plenty of speed, performance, functionality and storage for your first website. You can upgrade your hosting plan as your website grows>
  2. You will be prompted to choose a domain name as you can see in example below. Double check your domain name to avoid typos.
  3. And on the next screens, enter your personal information and credit card details. And complete payment.
  4. In Bluehost cPanel (administration panel), find a button which says Install WordPress
  5. Click on a green Install button to proceed with WordPress installation
  6. Now select if you want to use your website with or without “www.” at front of your website name (www.YourWebsite.com or YourWebsite.com). If you can’t decide you can leave it as is. It can be easily changed afterwards
  7. The details for the WordPress installation like email ID, username and password can be set. And tick all the necessary conditions under a licence agreement.
  8. And install.
  9. Once installation is complete you will see a clear message on top saying “Your Install is Complete!” and button saying “View Credentials”
  10. By clicking on that button you will be sent to a page where you will be able to find your newly installed WordPress login credentials.
  11. Now you can login on your website by clicking link that says YourWebsitName.com/wp-admin.

SiteGround

SiteGroud’s shared hosting plan has a similar, equally easy to use WordPress installation and domain registration process. The site asks you whether you have a domain name or need to register one, in our case since you are creating your first site you need to register a domain.

Following the domain registration you can follow this easy to use this three step tutorial for a guided WordPress installation. It is best to select “Get WordPress Preinstalled in this account” and you will not need to get your hands dirty. You’ll need to set admin email ID, username and password, you’re set!

Now that your domain is registered, hosting paid for and your WordPress installed. What’s next?

WordPress Admin Screens

  • Go to yourwebsitename.com/wp-admin.
  • Type in the username and password you previously entered during the WordPress installation process.

Your WordPress admin menu is available on the left side of the screen. Allowing your cursor to linger over them will open sub menus.

  • Dashboard
  • Posts
  • Media
  • Links
  • Pages
  • Comments
  • Appearance
  • Plugins
  • Users
  • Tools
  • Settings

That is a lot of stuff which you deal with. But I’ve promised to get your site up and running. So for the purposes of this post I will not be talking about Settings, Tools, Users or Your Dashboard.

I will talk about the rest of the menu options which are part of your WordPress menu. Let’s get started.

Customizing your site’s Appearance and activating a WordPress Theme

Themes (Appearances > Themes)

    1. Open Appearances > Themes. From here on have a look at the heading of each subsection if you have doubts with regards to accessing a particular part of the WordPress menu from the admin screen.

install-new-wordpress-theme

    1. And click on the “Add New” button on the top. And choose from one of the themes displayed or search for a specific theme. For a list of awesome free themes, you can check out this theme collection.

install-sparkling-theme

    1. Install a new theme that you fancy and activate it.

The next part involves customization of a theme. You can access this under from Appearance > Customize. You can do a number of things to your site’s appearance from here. But that’s not the crux of this post, a theme is sufficient to start a website.

Widgets (Appearances > Widgets)

Widgets are preset modules or pieces of code that add to a certain function which will prove useful for your website in some capacity or the other. Your sidebars, footers and headers can be loaded with widgets.

wordpress-widget-manager

As you can see in the above screenshot, there 6 widgets in the sidebar.  These widgets include a search bar, a recent posts widget, recent comments, archives, categories and meta. Then you can see 4 footer areas where you can add widgets just the same. The number of footer, header and sidebar areas available to you depends on the theme you are using.

Widgets are not plugins, but they are small chunks of code that add a bit of function. Sometimes it may help with navigation, sometimes with social media, you can even use to add HTML to a text widget which will function as coded to do so. So widgets are a very useful tool but you need to learn a bit about them before you can use them to the fullest.

Menus (Appearances > Menu)

Menus are an extremely important for any website. They offer a means to navigate your site and its content. After all, what’s the point in creating captivating content and if your visitor can not find it easily on your site. Bad menus and navigation can lead to a high bounce rate (the number of visitors as a percentage who leave your site after just viewing just one page).

You may have seen websites with menus on the top or the side and even at the bottom. We can do all of this.

You’d like to include pages like “About”, “Blog”, “Contact” and “Our Services” as part of your primary menu. Any page you’d like displayed on your menu can be added. The number of menus and their placement on your site depends on your WordPress theme.

You can add all the stuff that you see on the left to the menu ranging from pages to products as part of your menu. Again what you can include as part of the menu depends on your WordPress theme.

wordpress-menu-manager

A good menu,

  • Is concise and minimal.
  • It is a representation of all your site’s offerings.
  • Very intuitive to use and maneuver around your site.

Keep that in mind and you should be fine.

Background (Appearances > Background)

Many website choose to have plain single color background and I am big fan of that.

The Bigsweb blog has a plain white background and it keeps things simple. But the homepage of the site is pretty awesome with a purple background and our tagline.

Websites that are media heavy, examples would include photography sites or portfolio websites have great backgrounds. If you want your website to send across a powerful visual cue to your audience use a powerful background image. Else you can simply opt for a plain color which is appropriate for any blog that emphasizes readability.

A background should not be confused with a slider image which is basically a constantly changing image that moves across or your screen or changes with fancy animation.

Adding New Plugins (Plugins > Add New)

Plugins are a scripts or pieces of code written to perform a very specific function or set of functions on your website.

A simple example would be social sharing plugin, it helps share your content across different social platforms and helps get the word out that your content is awesome. Similarly, people have developed plugins for search engine optimization, security purposes, creating and maintaining a portfolio of images, to create contact forms, for caching the list is endless.

Adding Pages (Pages > Add New)

Pages on a website help divide your website into a requisite number of pieces to present the different sections of your site’s content. Pages are to themes like widgets are to plugins. With pages you can create specific template styles that can be called on command for different purposes that require the same or similar design. Pages are more than posts and are used for specific purposes on your site. You can create pages specifically to cater to the requirements of a Contact Us Page or perhaps create landing page.

add-new-page-wordpress

And you are greeted by a New Page, which you can now fill up. From this new screen, you can create a new page and assign page attributes.

If you either need to create a template that you’re likely to use often or need to recreate a section of your site for a specific purpose, creating a page is the way to go.

Comments (Access from WordPress menu)

Websites need readers to make them successful. Comments are a very powerful means to establish a great debate on your site and this only further adds value to your site. Hardly, one percent of the traffic that visits your site will ever comment. And that is assuming that the content is great to begin with. Driving interaction with passive readers on your site is difficult and takes time and effort.

A great post with a pre-existing comment history helps your site receive more comments. Aigars wrote an awesome post on BigsWeb a while back, yet till this day it still keeps receiving comments and continues to be a great source of traffic.

And remember, WordPress allows you to link your site when you comment on another person’s blog. And this may send visitors your way, if you play your cards right and make genuine attempts to offer something constructive. For this same reason, many people will leave their comments on your blog as well.

If I feel your content is great and a particular post that you’ve written is awesome, then I’ll almost jump at the chance to leave my comment first and best anyone else to first comment. Because I know eventually it will lead a few visitors back to my site.

Comments are a great way to build an awesome readership and a loyal following for your site.

Adding Content

Content is king may be a cliched line. But it is true now more so than ever before. There are many more websites now than there ever were before. You name a niche, any niche and it is bound to be saturated to the hilt with websites producing content about said niche. WordPress is a very profitable niche. Why? 50% of websites use it and many of them are new to WP. WordPress newbies and even intermediate level users require a few resources to help them get started up and make changes to their WordPress sites, not too dissimilar to the content on BigsWeb 😉 But a website like BigsWeb works well and generates revenue only when we offer value to our readers.

We publish a great number of articles on premium WordPress themes and should you choose to buy one of them after clicking on our links we receive a small commission on your purchase. But truth be told, our most popular and widely read articles aren’t the ones that describe premium WordPress themes or plugins, rather they are WordPress tutorials and posts dedicated to free themes, plugins and other WordPress related articles. Because it is only when we offer value to readers that our site grows.

So based on your site’s niche and your expertise,  you need to produce content that genuinely offers value to would be readers. If you intend to create your site purely for monetary purposes, it will not be successful in the long run. No wait a minute, it may still be profitable but certainly not as successful as it could have been had you tried to genuinely help your audiences. So focus on good content.

Pick your niche and offer great value to your readers. And watch your traffic grow steadily and if you are lucky, perhaps even go through the roof!

So how do you publish your content on WordPress? What are the formats available to you apart from just plain ol’ text?

Posts (Posts > Add New)

The beating heart of your site or most sites anyway. At the end of this tutorial when all’s said and done, you’ll be here to populate your site with posts. WordPress has a very easy to use posting mechanism and this one of the reasons, it is so popular.

You have two ways in which you can write your posts: one is the visual editor and the other is HTML editor. You can opt to use the visual editor to begin with, but you should know the HTML editor (referred to as text editor) is a very powerful tool to help you create the right formatting for your posts. The sooner you are comfortable with the text editor, the better of you will be. You may notice I am using the visual editor and truth be told, once I’ve added all the necessary formatting I prefer the visual editor.

add-blog-post-to-wordpress

The visual editor is very much similar to most text editors and permits you to add bold / italic effects to your text, change its font, add bulleted lists and numbered lists, align content differently and add hyperlinks. There is also a distraction free writing mode which gives you a fullscreen version of the editor.

Categories (Posts > Categories)

Categories are a means to divide your content. Categories are a big more important when your site publishes content on a number of issues. You can add categories from your Post editor or you can access it under Posts > Categories.

Now you can name the category to create one and then you can add a slug which is basically a URL add on of sorts for all your site’s posts on that specific category. For example, if I know that BigsWeb produces a lot of theme collection content, I can Google search BigsWeb + collections and the first search result link is – https://BigsWeb.com/wp/category/collections/ . With this I can view only the posts that have been published under the category, “Collections”.

So it is a very effective way to divide your site’s content and make finding stuff on your site much easier for a visitor.

Tags (Posts > Tags)

Tags are very similar to categories, except each post generally has its own set of tags. Tags are a tad more specific than categories but that apart they are the same and they aid in helping visitors find your content more easily.

Media (Media >Add New)

Media as in photos and videos are important to normal websites. They are even more so for media heavy websites. Adding media is easy with WordPress. You can either add media from Posts or you can add media directly to the media library.

You can add the image title, a caption, description to the image. But it is also important you also add the alt text which helps search engines identify your image. It is a small step in ensuring good search engine optimization.

There a lot of effects and stuff you can do to your imagery like make it pop up or use a lightbox with WordPress plugins. But that’s for another day.

Setting up your WordPress profile. This is rather easy to deal with. You can edit your profile from the “Edit Your Profile” on your WordPress admin screen on the top right hand corner. You can describe yourself and add the necessary social media links as well.

And to add a profile picture for your WordPress ID, you’ll need to get a Gravatar account. You’ll need an account from WordPress.com with which you can login to your site’s admin panel.

Just Start!

We have far too many inhibitions, starting stuff is one of them. It opens the door to failure.

Creating the website and generating revenue is no joke. It is hard work, sometimes seemingly unrewarding work.

Over the next few weeks and months, we’ll be launching our “Getting Started With WordPress” post series to help you out.

And apart from that if you need anything else, do let us know in the comments below! Aigars and I will always be happy to help you out 🙂

Top Windows 10 Tips and Tricks

COMPUTER TIPS, MICROSOFT, TIPS & TRICKS

Now that Windows 10 is out and millions of people are already running it, let’s take a look at some of the best hidden features, tips, and tricks in Microsoft’s latest (and last) major operating system was released to the public, and between the slightly confusing upgrade policy and phased rollouts, we’ve seen that the operating system is actually quite good. Since it aims to bridge the gap between mobile and desktop devices, there’s quite a lot that’s changed, but it’s still familiar and easy to use. There are quite a lot of nifty little features added that make it easier to use, but some of them are buried under settings that we usually wouldn’t look for, so here’s a couple of Windows 10 tips and tricks that you might just find useful!

Set File Explorer To Open ‘This PC’

Windows 8/8.1 got rid of the ‘My Computer’ icon we’ve all been used to for years, but it did give you the option to place an icon that leads to ‘This PC’, which was basically the same. You can also get that icon back on Windows 10 by the following process: Right Click Desktop>Click ‘Personalize’>Click ‘Themes’>On the right side, click ‘Go to Desktop icon settings’, then click whatever icons you want to be shown on the desktop. You can then pin these icons to the Start Menu.

Instead, if you prefer not having more icons, you can simply make the ‘File Explorer’ button on the Start Menu lead to ‘This PC’. To do this, you need to:

Step 1 – Open any Windows Explorer window and click the ‘View’ tab on the top ribbon.

Step 2 – Click ‘Options’ on the extended ribbon, on the top right.

Step 3 – In the ‘General’ tab, use the dropdown menu next to ‘Open File Explorer to:’ to select ‘This PC’.

Remove Search Bar and Task View Button From Taskbar

Microsoft is betting big on their virtual assistant Cortana for all devices, and even though she’s pretty awesome, some people might not like the extra clutter caused by the Search Bar on the Taskbar. You can always just open the Start Menu and type anything to do the same. To remove it, you need to right click the Taskbar, then under ‘Search’, select either ‘Hidden’ or ‘Show Search icon’.

Similarly, the new Task View feature on Windows 10 also gets a separate button that many might not like. To remove it, again right click the Taskbar and untick ‘Show Task View button’.

Customize Command Prompt

Top-Windows-10-Tips-and-Tricks-Customize-Command-Prompt

The spartan looking Command Prompt can finally be customized in Windows 10. You can select from options like text color, background color, font, size, opacity and more. Just open the Command Prompt and right click the top bar, then select ‘Properties’.

Background Scrolling

It’s pretty annoying when a popup takes away your attention and deactivates the window you’re using so you need to click on it again to scroll through the page. Windows 10 gets rid of this problem by a feature called Background Scrolling. Now even if the window isn’t active, if your cursor is on it, you can scroll through the page. Pretty cool, right? Here’s how you enable it:

Step 1 – Go to All Settings, Devices, then Mouse & touchpad.

Step 2 – Turn on the option that says ‘Scroll inactive windows when I hover over them.’

Resize Start Menu

Windows 10 is a departure from the full screen Start Menu found in Windows 8/8.1, but if you want, you can still set it to be full screen. Now what isn’t immediately apparent is that the Start Menu can be resized as well! All you need to do is move the cursor to the edge of the Start Menu and drag it to the size you want.

Background App Manager

Top-Windows-10-Tips-and-Tricks-Background-App-Manager

Similar to Windows 10 Mobile, the full desktop version also gives you the option to restrict which apps run in the background. So you can stop say, Weather or Sports from running if you don’t need them. Simply navigate to All Settings>Privacy>Background Apps and then select which apps you want to stop running in the background.

Timed Screenshots

Top-Windows-10-Tips-and-Tricks-Timed-Screenshots

Windows 10 adds the very cool feature of taking timed screenshots. Basically you can add a small delay in seconds, after which the screenshot is taken. Just open the Snipping Tool, click ‘Delay’, select your desired delay period and then take the screenshot.

Desktop Shortcuts on Command Prompt

Customization isn’t the only feature that’s been added to Command Prompt. You can now use desktop shortcuts like CTRL + C, CTRL + V and more on it. This is an absolute godsend for someone who needs to type out a long list of commands, now you can copy paste it just like any other text.

So there you have it, small yet pretty cool and unknown features that Windows 10 has brought with it! We’ll keep updating the list if anything else comes up, so stay tuned and do let us know what you thought of the article!

How to Delete your Personal Information collected by Google

GOOGLE, INTERNET, SAFTY TIPS, TIPS & TRICKS

Everyone worried about our privacy and safety of our personal information which are collected by Google and other online marketing websites. Google collect our personal information and sold to many online business and advertising companies for high profits. So how to avoid our personal information going to others without our concern.

Well, Yahoo! News has the step by step instructions for “How to Download and Delete What Google Search Knows About You”:

Have you ever wondered what Google Search really knows about you? Well, now you can check, as Google has added a new feature that lets you view and download your entire search history.

Yep. Everything.

The feature, which was spotted by the unofficial Google Operating System Blog — though VentureBeat points out that the function was made available in January — gives you access to everything from what you searched for to the links you clicked on from those searches. It also shows you the addresses you’ve searched for.

I was even able to see the list of images I clicked on while searching for pictures of cats eating spaghetti. Now imagine what you’ve looked for. Oh, and clearing your browser history won’t delete this data.

But there’s no reason to panic, because in addition to being able to download your search history, you can clear it.

First, here’s how to download your history:

1. Navigate to Google’s Web and App Activity page.

Personal Information collected by Google (3)

2. Next, click the gear icon in the top-right corner of the screen.

Personal Information collected by Google (4)

3. Then select Download from the drop-down menu.

Personal Information collected by Google (5)

You’ll then receive a pop-up window warning you not to download your search history to a public computer, as it contains a large amount of sensitive information.

4. If you want to continue, click Create Archive.

Personal Information collected by Google (6)

Once your history is downloaded, you’ll receive a link in a few seconds that lets you view your data.

If you don’t want to download your data, and would rather get rid of it, you can do that as well. Of course, there are some reasons to let Google keep your search data. For one thing, it guarantees faster search results. It also ensures that Google Now has all of the latest relevant information about you. If you delete your data, your searches won’t be as tailored to your habits.

Still want to get rid of your search history? Here’s how:

Before we get started, it’s worth pointing out that if you want to keep your information hidden, you can use your browser’s privacy option, which keeps Google from saving your data — though it can still be seen by your service provider or employer.

Simply deleting you browser history won’t clear the data saved by Google, as you’re only deleting the information stored by your browser and not what’s on Google’s servers. To do that, you’ll have to:

1. Navigate to the Web and App Activity Page and click the gear icon in the top-right corner.

Personal Information collected by Google (7)

2. Select Remove Items and choose the beginning of time from the drop-down menu.

Personal Information collected by Google (1)

3.Click Remove and kiss your data goodbye.

Personal Information collected by Google (2)

That’s it. All of your search history will be deleted, and you’ll never have to worry about Google knowing about the time you looked for tickets to a Justin Bieber concert.

Google’s Chromebit Turns Any TV Into a Chromebook

COMPUTER TIPS, GOOGLE, Google Chrome

Google just introduced a whole new kind of Chromebook OS computer—a dongle that plugs into any HDMI-equipped display. It’s called a Chromebit, and it isn’t your run-of-the-mill streaming stick. For under $100, you’re looking at a full computer that plugs right into your TV.

“Get more done and worry less.” That’s what teachers, businesses, and everyday people have told us they can do, thanks to Chromebooks. Since we introduced them four years ago, Chromebooks have made computers faster, simpler, and more secure, while eliminating everyday hassles like waiting for your computer to boot up, having to constantly charge it, and remembering to install software updates. And a lot of people love them—Chromebooks were the best selling laptops on Amazon last holiday season, and teachers and students made them the #1 device in schools last year.

Quality and affordability

You shouldn’t have to choose between a computer that performs well and one that you can afford. Today we’re introducing two new devices that meet both criteria: the Haier Chromebook 11 (available at Amazon) and the Hisense Chromebook (available at Walmart). These new Chromebooks are fast, lightweight, have long-life batteries and are available for pre-order today for $149.

They join new partners like TRUE, XOLO, and Nexian and our existing range of Chrome devices —ranging from 11.6” Chromebooks for $199 to 15” Chromebooks for $499 rolling out over the next few months from partners like Acer, AOPEN, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo and LG.

A Chromebook you’ll flip for

We’re also excited about the ASUS Chromebook Flip. A premium, all-metal convertible, it’s ultra-portable—just 15mm thin and weighing less than two pounds. The Chromebook Flip has a great keyboard and a touch screen for immersive experiences like gaming and educational apps. It will be available later this spring for $249.

A little bit more…

This summer, ASUS will launch a new type of Chrome device: the Chromebit. Smaller than a candy bar, the Chromebit is a full computer that will be available for less than $100. By simply plugging this device into any display, you can turn it into a computer. It’s the perfect upgrade for an existing desktop and will be really useful for schools and businesses.
