Best Configuration Guide for WordPress SEO by Yoast

MONEY MAKING, SEO, WEBMASTER

Everyone these days tries to rank their site’s content higher in Google Search results. There are marketing firms earning a good deal of revenue in relation to the most notorious digital term these days, “SEO”. In this post I will be explaining the different aspects of “On Page SEO”, how to deal with it in WordPress using one of the best free plugins: WordPress SEO by Yoast.

This is a series of tutorials, in the first one we will be configuring and understanding different sections of the WordPress SEO Plugin. Future tutorials in this series will be about different aspects of SEO, how to utilize your site’s Tags & Categories, the concept of rel='canonical', a practical example of an SEO optimized post, and finally some discussion about what else you need to do after having this plugin configured.

This tutorial will help you in optimizing your WordPress sites with the most popular aspects of On Page SEO. Today our goal is to configure this WordPress SEO plugin and to understand the meaning of each step.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or un-paid (“organic”) search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users.

Why the plugin WordPress SEO By Yoast? I believe it is the best and most complete SEO plugin available for free, though not as easy as AIO SEO, but it comprises of certain vital SEO modules which are the results of the vast experience of Joost de Valk – An elite WordPress developer who developed this plugin.

First of all head over to your WordPress admin panel and install the plugin named WordPress SEO by Yoast (Go to Plugins > Add New > Search for WordPress SEO By Yoast > Install it > Then activate it). After activating the plugin, if you observe the left side menu, you will find a new panel introduced with the name SEO, just like the one in the image below.

SEO-Panel

When you click it you will be inside the Dashboard of the WordPress SEO plugin. Here you can take a tour or restore the default settings of this plugin in future. More over you will find Tracking and Security check boxes.

It allows the author of the plugin to track issues with the plugin if there are any, in future. If you are concerned about your privacy you should keep it unchecked.

This option, if checked, will disallow your Editors and Authors from redirecting a post to another URL, which is one of the capabilities of the plugin. Checking this will also forbid them from no-indexing your posts. If you don’t trust your Editors and Authors, this option should be checked.

These tools allow you to easily verify your site’s ownership by using the meta code provided by Google and Bing Webmaster tools. This option can also help you in verifying your site for Alexa (if you have their premium subscription). You can see I have filled in the Google Webmaster’s meta code.

Tip: Using Google & Bing Webmaster tools help you in understanding the behavior of your site (how much your site is linked, 404 errors, page speed etc).
Dashboard

After you are done with these configurations you can press the button saying “Save Settings“.

Then comes the Titles and Metas panel, this panel helps you in configuring the title, site wide metas, and cleaning up the head. Let’s see what the options are here and how to deal with them:

This option means that the WordPress SEO plugin needs to change the title tag of your installed theme, so that it can modify it as per your settings. This option should normally be ticked.

No-index subpages of archives: It should be checked as it helps your homepage to retain its importance, your Homepage is one of the most important parts of your blog.

Use meta keywords tag: I prefer to check it, as the Search Engines like Yahoo and Bing are known to give some importance to these meta keywords. These are the keywords around which your article is based.

Add noodp meta robots tag sitewide and Add noydir meta robots tag sitewide are used if your site is present in DMOZ or Yahoo Directory, sometimes Google prefers the description of your site from these directories, enabling these tags can help you remove this kind of error.

There is a theory that Google prefers a clean head. Most of the SEO Analysts suggest to keep your site’s head portion clean, the top most links which the Google bot reads get more importance. I don’t prefer hiding these links, as in RSD, WLW Manifest Links and shortlinks of your WordPress posts are helpful in a way like if you use Microsoft Live Editor to Publish your posts then hiding these links is not preferred. If you plan to clean up the head of your blog anyway, I would recommend you check the first three options and leave the RSS links option unchecked. Why? Because RSS links are read by certain plugins and can get you more subscribers. Some people say these RSS links are valuable assets for your blog. Enough said!

Titles-and-Metas1Done with Title and Metas? Press “Save Settings”

Click the Home tab inside the plugin and you will land on the page where all the settings of your Homepage can be found. These settings are kind of ‘set and forget’ settings. You can see the character limits in the image below, fill according to your domain name and niche.

Title: 70 Characters, can be Domain Name with Slogan. e.g. TheBookShop.com – Buy Books at Cheapest Rates

Description: 160 characters in which you will use your focused keyword once. e.g. If your site is for a book shop, you can include the term Buy Books here.

Meta keywords: Don’t spam this box, just put 5 to 6 keywords here, and you should put long tail keywords here, e.g. Download Books at Cheap Rates, Cheap priced Books Downloads etc.

After that, go to your profile page from the top right corner of the Admin Bar, fill in the Google+ URL of your profile and select your name from the users list at the Home Tab of the WordPress SEO plugin, so that your thumbnail is displayed with the exact domain name in Google’s Search. It is due to the rel="author" attribute that WordPress SEO adds this to the header with your profile link. This helps you get a good deal of exposure and more clicks. Make a Google+ page for your blog and add the URL in the box at the end, so that rel="publisher" can be added. These two rel attributes are important for your On Page SEO, and help your site rank better.

Homepage-Settings

After all these settings you need to click “Save Settings”.

Then click the Post Types tab where you will generically configure the On Page SEO elements for Posts, Pages and Media files.

The Help tab provides the details about these generic tags we are using here, but I recommend you do it the way it is done in the image below. Why? After experimenting for about three to five years, I have found these settings best. Of course, we are not going to no-index the posts, but if you tick the Meta Robots No-index then search engines won’t index your posts. Either you check the date snippet or not, if your theme supports the date tag then Google will include it in its search results. I find the date factor very important in On Page SEO, though you can find contrary suggestions about this factor from a lot of people.

Post-SEO
  • %%title%% Replaced with the title of the post/page.
  • %%focuskw%% Replaced with the post’s focus keyword.
  • %%tag%% Replaced with the current tag/tags.
  • %%category%% Replaced with the post categories (comma-separated).
  • %%excerpt%% Replaced with the post/page excerpt (or auto-generated if it does not exist).

Set the pages’ parameters as mentioned in the following image:

Pages-SEO
  • %%sitename%% The site’s name

If you want to index media files separately then you can uncheck the checked box against Meta Robots, and set it like the below image:

The WordPress SEO plugin allows you to configure the On Page SEO parameters for taxonomies like Categories, Tags, Formats and any Custom Taxonomies, if you have them.

Normally Categories are used to categorize the content into organized form, and tags are used to put more aliases for a single post. Right now our focus is towards the configuration of WordPress SEO by Yoast, so we will skip this discussion, but you will read some details about this in next tutorial of the series.

I don’t index both of them so that Search Engines should give most importance to my main article’s titles instead of Tags or their Categories. Here are the settings, if you see I have checked Meta Robots Nofollow so that the Google bot never indexes them.

Same goes for formats, I have checked no-index for them, you can index them if you want.

IAuthor-SEO

I recommend you no-index as shown below, you should disable them to save yourself from a Content Duplication penalty.

Search and 404 pages can have the following template settings:

Formats-SEOSpecial-Pages-SEO

In the next tutorial we will configure the Social part, XML Sitemaps, Permalinks, Internal links, RSS, and will look into the robots.txt file. Do you have any questions regarding this tutorial? Let us know.

P.S. I tried my best to be as generic in approach as I could. You can find a lot of contradictory opinions about what I discussed, so to be clear once again, this is how I do things at my side, and I have been working with gigantic blogs and vast networks, these settings and configurations have proven to be great in my experience.

How can you protect yourself while online?

BROWSER, COMPUTER TIPS, INTERNET, SAFTY TIPS, TIPS & TRICKS

When sending confidential information over the Internet such as usernames, passwords, or credit card numbers only send it securely. To verify this look for a small lock (Internet browser security lock) in the bottom right corner of your browser window or next to the address bar (as shown below). If visible, this lock should also be in the locked position and not unlocked.

Internet Explorer 7.0 secure address bar
Internet Explorer 7 secure address bar

We also suggest making sure the URL begins with https as shown above.

While the lock is in the lock position, data is encrypted, which helps anyone from understanding the data if it’s intercepted. When no lock is visible or in the unlocked position all information is plaintext and if intercepted could be read. If a web page is not secure, such as an online forum, use a password you wouldn’t use with protected sites such as your online banking website.

E-mail is not encrypted

Websites should not transmit confidential data over e-mail, such as passwords, credit card information, etc. E-mail is not encrypted and if intercepted by a third-party could be read.

Be aware of phishing scams

Familiarized yourself with phishing scams and techniques, which are used to trick you into divulging your account information. Online banking sites, Paypal, eBay, Amazon, and other popular sites that require logins are popular targets.

Use a safe password

Websites that store confidential data, such as an online bank site need to use strong passwords. Also, it is highly recommended that you use a different password for each website that requires a login. If you need help remembering your passwords consider using a password manager.

Use caution when accepting or agreeing to prompts

When prompted to install any program or add-on make sure to read and understand the agreement before clicking on the Ok button. If you do not understand the agreement or feel it is not necessary to install the program cancel or close the window.

Additionally, when installing any program watch for any check box that asks if it’s ok to install a third-party program, toolbar, etc. These are never required and often cause more issues than good. Leave these boxes unchecked.

Be cautious where you’re logging in from

Business

Your place of work can install key loggers or use other methods of monitoring the computer while online. Someone who has access to this information could read these logs and gather usernames and passwords. Also, do not store any passwords in your browser if your computer is shared with other coworkers.

Wireless network

When on a wireless network realize that all information being sent to and from your computer can be intercepted and read by someone nearby. Prevent this from happening by only logging into a secure network using WEP or WPA. If this is a home wireless network, make sure it is secure.

Friends house

Be concerned when logging into an account from a friends computer. A computer or network you are not familiar with could intentionally or unintentionally log usernames and passwords. Finally, when logging into any site on a friends computer never save the password information on their browser.

Be aware of those around you

While at work, school, library, or anywhere that has people around who could look at the monitor be cautious of anyone shoulder surfing. Someone could watch you type in your password, which would give them access to your account.

If you need everything displayed on the screen to remain private, consider a privacy filter for the display.

Update Internet browser plugins

Often many attackers find security vulnerabilities through browser plugins such as Adobe Flash. Make sure all installed Internet plug-ins are up-to-date.

Secure saved passwords

Make sure to store passwords and login information in a secure area. Never write login information on a sticky note or in a text file that is not encrypted.

To save your passwords we recommend using a password manager, which stores all login information and securely encrypts and password protects that information.

When saving password information in a browser, it may be visible by anyone who has access to your Internet browser. For example, without a master password setup in Firefox anyone can see all stored passwords.

Use a third-party service to confirm the safety and security of a page

We recommend the free Web of Trust (WOT) tool to verify the safety of all websites on the Internet.

A new tab can be opened by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking the link or if you have a mouse with a wheel press down on the wheel to use it as a middle mouse button to open the link in a new tab.

Use Internet search engines to their full potential

Get the most out of every search result. If you are not finding what you want try surrounding the text in quotes. For example, searching for ‘computer help’ without quotes returns results with “computer” and “help” anywhere on the page. However, if you search for “computer help” with the quotes it only return pages with “computer” and “help” next to each other.

Tip: In every search box you can press enter instead of using the mouse to click the Search button.

Box is a cloud platform that helps you securely store, share and manage all your company’s files. Whether you need to secure confidential business information, to develop a custom mobile application or are trying to simplify paper-based office processes, Box can help you do more with your content.

Box.net provides online data storage, and collaboration. Cloud-storage service Box already beats the likes of Dropbox and SkyDrive by offering 10GB of free storage to anyone who signs up for a personal account. (Those two competitors give you just 2GB and 7GB, respectively.)

Simple, Secure Sharing

Box lets you quickly and easily work securely with anyone – even if they’re outside your firewall. Share large files, view and comment on any kind of document, and connect with co-workers – no matter what device they use.

The features provided by Box.Net for free service are pretty basic, and the space limit of 1GB for free accounts is too small. The more advanced features are limited to paid accounts. Microsoft SkyDrive is changed to OneDrive

INTERNET, ONLINE STORAGE

OneDrive is the new Microsoft SkyDrive. Apart from the name change, a couple of new features have also been added. Now, documents that you share with people (like spreadsheets etc.) with other OneDrive users can be edited in real time by multiple users – you can actually see the changes being made by other users on your document while the document is open in your web browser. This is a much welcome feature that was never present on SkyDrive earlier. Teamwork becomes much easier with this update.

Alright, let’s talk about the stuff that has changed, and the stuff that hasn’t changed in more detail.

Microsoft SkyDrive is changed to OneDrive (1)

The name change…

I did a bit of research online, and it’s actually pretty funny to know why Microsoft suddenly decided to change the name of SkyDrive. Microsoft was actually sued by Sky TV provider in the UK for breaching its trademark, and following a high court ruling, it was decided that because of breaching BSkyB’s trademark rights, Microsoft had to rename the service or shut it down. Well apparently Microsoft promised to change the name within a reasonable period of time, and that’s what happened.

So why the name OneDrive? I don’t really know, but maybe it has got to do something with offering the capability to store all kinds of documents into one location or one drive – hence OneDrive. Maybe it’s also because of the new “One” line of products that Microsoft has been bringing up- like the Xbox One. But who really knows!

What has changed?

+ The name, of course.

+ A small change, but now you can change your status from Available to Invisible from the Drive page itself. See below screenshot when I click my name on the top right, I get the options to change my status.

Microsoft SkyDrive is changed to OneDrive (1)

+ You can now chat with online users from OneDrive itself. Click on the message button, and a chat box opens up at the right side of the screen. This box also allows you to link your Facebook, Skype etc. accounts to chat with people online on those accounts. Pretty neat feature, so you can chat with your Facebook friends while still staying inside the OneDrive interface! The below screenshot illustrates the chat box.

Microsoft SkyDrive is changed to OneDrive (2)

+ People can edit your documents in real time! Also, people with non Microsoft accounts can be invited to edit the documents in real time. Now with this feature, Microsoft has really killed Google Drive as Google Drive only allows editing documents by people who have an account on Google. See the screenshot below to know how people can be invited to edit a document.

image_Microsoft SkyDrive is changed to OneDrivethumb41

The above box appears when you choose to share your document. Click Share after adding the email id.

+ With the new OneDrive, it’s incredibly easy to allow people even without email ids to edit your document. For this, click on Get a Link in the above screenshot towards the left. Just ask the person who wishes to edit to copy and paste that link in the browser, and he’ll be able to edit the document. Make sure that the option to allow editing is checked before you click Generate Link.

Well, this pretty much sums up the new features.

Real time collaboration…

To demonstrate this feature, I opened up two browser windows, and I input some text in the right window and some in the left. I could see exactly where the other person’s cursor was, and what’s more, I could actually see the letters being typed in the window where I wasn’t actually typing anything. This shows the true advancement in real time editing technology that Microsoft has implemented in the new SkyDrive, or should I say, the OneDrive.

What hasn’t changed…

+ The interface is the same.

+ You get the same 7 GB of signup storage space.

Platforms supported…

Apart from the standard web browser support, the app has made its way on the Android Play Store and the iOS App Market. An update for the preinstalled SkyDrive App is on the way for Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone OS.

Save any Images and Files to Google Drive or Dropbox directly with Ballloon

BROWSER, Chrome Extension, INTERNET, ONLINE STORAGE

Ballloon (yes, with an extra l) is an amazing Google Chrome extension that lets you save all kinds of images, PDF files, hyperlinks etc., to Cloud Storage service accounts with just one click. If you open any webpage and come across a file or image, just right click on it to save it directly to your cloud storage account (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.). The file does not even need to be downloaded to your PC to be saved to your cloud storage. In fact, if the file is large, you can just click on it to start the transfer process, and then even if you shutdown your PC, the file will be transferred to your cloud storage directly. There are no intermediate save locations, no extraneous permissions, or anything of that sort. Just one click, and it sends off the file to your cloud storage account.

Ballloon basically works by adding hover-over icons over images and relevant options to the right-click context menus of hyperlinks and PDF files. These can be then used to directly save these files to your cloud storage accounts. You can even change the default location Ballloon uses to save stuff to your cloud storage accounts. It practically works with any online image, hyperlink or PDF file link out there. Currently, Ballloon works with Google Drive and Dropbox, with support for OneDrive and Box coming soon. Sounds like something you could use? Head past the break to find out more.

Ballloon: Installation And Setting Up Your Cloud Accounts

Adding Ballloon to Google Chrome is just like adding any other Chrome extension. All you have to do is search for Ballloon in the Chrome web store (or click here), and click Add. Once you do that, a little balloon icon shows up in Chrome’s icon bar. However, you still need to do a little work before things get working. Here’s a step by step tutorial:

Step 1: Before you can start using Ballloon, you need to set up your cloud storage accounts to work with it. To do that, firstly you need to log-in via your Google account. Doing so is really simple, and all you have to do is enter your Google Account credentials and authorize Ballloon to access your account. Pretty standard stuff in here.

Save any Images and Files to Google Drive or Dropbox directly with Ballloon (2)

Step 2: Once you’re logged in via your Google Account, Ballloon’s extension icon changes from Grey to Blue. This extension icon provides one click access to all the settings related to your Ballloon account. Apart from this, it also shows some cool stuff, like random (and awesome) photos from artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, access to your cloud settings, user feedback, files scheduled for your cloud (called departures) and things like that. Pretty cool if you ask me.

Step 3: Next up, you need to configure your cloud storage accounts (Google Drive and Dropbox) to work with Ballloon. To do so, simply click the extension, horizontally scroll to the cloud settings section and click on it. You should get a screen like this:

Save any Images and Files to Google Drive or Dropbox directly with Ballloon (3)

Step 4: As illustrated by the above screenshot, the screen above lets you connect your Dropbox and Google Drive accounts to Ballloon and configure the default folder used by it to save stuff to your cloud storage accounts. Connecting your Dropbox and/or Google Drive accounts to Ballloon is extremely easy, and just involves the standard API authorization. Once the access is granted, your cloud storage account details show up.

Save any Images and Files to Google Drive or Dropbox directly with Ballloon (4)

That’s it. Ballloon is now connected to your Dropbox and Google Drive accounts, and is now ready to work its one click save mojo.

How To Save Images, PDF links, Hyperlinks With Ballloon?

Now that Ballloon is up and running, it’s time to see this little extension in action. As mentioned before, Ballloon lets you save web hosted images of all sorts, hosted PDF files, and hyperlinks to your cloud storage accounts with just a click or two. Let’s see how:

Saving A Web Hosted Image:

Step 1: Go to any image hosting website, or any website that has any kind of image on it. Hover your mouse pointer over the image that you want Ballloon to save. Once you do that, you’ll see two small icons (Dropbox and Google Drive) on the top right corner of the image. Check out the animated graphic below:

Save any Images and Files to Google Drive or Dropbox directly with Ballloon (1)

Step 2: Now, all you have to do to save this image to your Dropbox or Google Drive account is just click on the respective icon. Once you do that, this image will instantly “fly” to your cloud storage account, all thanks to Ballloon.

Save any Images and Files to Google Drive or Dropbox directly with Ballloon (5)

You can even check the image’s upload status by clicking the extension’s icon and navigating to the Departures section. That’s it. See, it literally takes one click. How cool is that?

Save Hyperlinks and Online PDF Files Directly to Google Drive and Dropbox:

Step 1: Go to any website that has any kind of hyperlink on it. Or go to any website that’s having a downloadable PDF hosted on it, with a download link.

Step 2: Right click on any hyperlink or PDF download link that you want to save to your cloud storage account, select Save to > Google Drive or Dropbox.

Save any Images and Files to Google Drive or Dropbox directly with Ballloon (6)

That’s it. Once you click on a selected cloud service, the hyperlink will be instantly saved as a web page (pointed to by the hyperlink), and the PDF will be saved as a, well, PDF to your selected cloud service. One click, is all it takes. Now that, is awesome.

Ballloon: Summary of Features

  • Literally, one click saving of web hosted images, PDFs and hyperlinks to Google Drive and Dropbox.
  • Amazingly simple and efficient.
  • Secure, as your files are directly saved to your cloud storage accounts.
  • Works with a large number of websites.

How to watch videos slow motion in YouTube

GOOGLE, INTERNET, TIPS & TRICKS

The YouTube video player lets you easily change* the playback speed of videos. You can watch a YouTube video in slow motion and see the frames in more detail or, if the video is boring, you can switch to fast motion mode and skim through the video by doubling the playback speed.

YouTube is home to countless eye-popping videos, everything from epic outfield catches to freaky car crashes to seemingly impossible dance moves.
Indeed, for the past couple days I’ve been watching, and rewatching, this video and trying to figure out how a person’s legs and feet can move that way. (It gets especially amazing around the 1-minute mark.)

Bottom line: there are times when it would be great to see a video in slow motion. YouTube offers this option, but it’s not exactly out in plain sight.

To adjust playback speed if you’re using the Chrome browser, click the Settings icon in the lower-right corner of the playback window, then click the Speed selector. Choose 0.25 for quarter-speed playback or 0.5 for half-speed. (Obviously you can also opt for faster playback if you wish.)

Don’t see that option? While I found it in Google Chrome, it wasn’t visible in either Firefox or Internet Explorer. However, you should still be able to access it in those browsers by enabling the HTML5 version of YouTube’s video player (click “Request the HTML5 player”), or by using the site discussed below.

Play YouTube Videos in Slow Motion

Method 1#: YouTube HTML5 Video Player

As I said earlier YouTube HTML5 player is not available by default for the viewers, but you can get it easily by following the below link. Once you visit the link click Request the HTML5 player and instantly your default video player will be changed to HTMNL5 player. Now search and open any video, click on Gear icon (bottom right) and choose speed. Below is the same in steps by step procedure.

Step 1: Go to http://www.youtube.com/html5

Step 2: Click on Request the HTML5 player button and wait for few seconds until you see the button has been changed to “Use the default player”
play-youtube-in-slow-motion

Step 3: Now search for any video and open it

Step 4: Now click on Gear icon (bottom right)

Step 5: Next click on Speed, then select your video playing speed from 0.5 to 0.25 and you are done!
play-youtube-in-slow-motion-2

I would recommend you to use 0.5 speed, because when I chose 0.25 the video was playing in slow motion but I was not able hear the sound. You can also play video in fast motion by following the same steps, but instead of selecting 0.5 or 0.25 select 1.5 or 2 to increase the speed.

How to Change Bing Safe Search

GOOGLE, INTERNET, SAFTY TIPS, Search Engine

Nowadays our kids are very familiar with  search engine  more than us, from their studies to entertainment they’re searching there. So I am going to explain how to save them from adult and irrelevant results in Microsoft Bing search engine.

How to turn off Bing Safe Search?  Bing is Microsoft’s new search engine, but the strict filters may be blocking valid text content you need to surf. How can you change the Bing safe search preferences from Strict to Moderate in India and many other countries, or turn on Strict filters in countries where the safe filter is set to moderate.

To edit the safe search preferences, you need to look at the top right corner and click Extras > Preferences.

bing-preferences

If you do not see a safe search preference option on that page, it means Strict Safe Search is enabled by default in your region. The Strict Filter will remove all explicit text, images, and videos from your search results. Here is what typically will happen when you search for blocked terms

bing-banned

If you check the Google Safe search settings, they are set to Moderate Filtering by default, which means block bad images only. But the Bing settings are set to Strict if the option is not available in your country. So your text results are also filtered.

google-safesearch

Change Bing Safe Search Settings

To change the options, you can change the country. Click on the country in the top right corner and select “United States – English”, or you can directly select US as your country. Now you can again go to Extras > Preferences and you will have the moderate safe search option selected by default, which will filter bad images and videos, but not text, from your search results.

google-safesearch

On the other hand, if you are in the US or other countries where moderate filters are on, you can go to Extras > Preferences and change your filter to Strict, which will stop all types of offensive content in one go. This is a good idea if children are surfing the web and you do not wish to get surprised by offensive search results slipping through filters. Bing also lets you report websites with adult content, if they are entering your search results with the strict filter on.

Why Different Regional Safe Filters?

Microsoft has updated their blog on the safe search issues and informs that the filters are on by default and if you need to turn it off, you need to confirm you are over 18 years.

Update: Microsoft advises you can add adlt=strict to the end of a query and no matter what the settings are for that session, it will return results as if safe search was set to strict.

How to Lock Google Safe Search to Protect Children Online

GOOGLE, INTERNET, SAFTY TIPS, Search Engine

Nowadays our kids are very familiar with Google search more than us,  from their studies to entertainment they’re searching there. So I am going to explain how to save them from adult and irrelevant results in google search engine.

Did you know that you can lock Google safe search, to protect your children online from searching adult content, and getting surprised by unexpected sexual search results. If your children use the same computer and browser that you do,  then it is highly recommended that you to enable and lock strict safe search, besides using a good parental control software and a filtered web browser.

Google does provide an option for strict search results, but it doesn’t serve much purpose as children can always turn off safesearch in click. Don’t think that your children would do that –  if they created an underage Facebook account, this is much easier.

google-search-settings

So the good idea would be to apply strict search filtering, and Lock safe search with password protection of your Google account.

How to Lock Safe Search?

Proceed to the search settings icon (gear shaped), and choose search settings. In the safe search filters, choose the strict filtering option which will filter out most explicit sexual content from webpages, images and videos.

lock-safe-search

Once you decide to lock safe search, the good thing is that Google will lock this across all Google domains, so children cannot use a different Google domain name like google.in and get access to unmoderated search. Now Google will ask you for your Google account password which will lock the search results.

safesearch-locked

That’s it. Now all the Google search results will be strict filtered and will need your Google account password to unlock safe search. This is how the coloured Google balls will appear on the top right of the screen when this Google safe search is activated and locked (which parents can easily monitor from across the room).

google-search-blocked

In fact, I would also go ahead and recommend that you turn off Google instant search and show more search results instead, so that unexpected results and images don’t appear in the window below as your children continue to type their search terms.

Remember, this is just one option for parental control on Google search. Even after activating it, you will still find a lot of content which you may feel is explicit for your children, but still it is better than not having unlocked Google safe search at all.

Internet is an unsafe place, and there are hundreds of other ways in which children can access adult content and unblock websites, so you must activate parental control software on your computers. There are so many image search engines, and just blocking Google image search does not block explicit images.

Microsoft Bing search turns on strict safe search in most countries by default, and you can learn about how to turn on  Bing Safe Search in your region.

Simple Facebook Security Tips

INTERNET, SAFTY TIPS, SOCIAL MEDIA

Facebook is a great way of keeping in touch with friends. However, you need to be very careful about the type of information that you reveal… just in case it falls into the wrong hands.

Internet Security tips – to help you use Facebook more safely

With cybercriminals using a wide range of financial scams in order to try to steal money – and criminals also making bogus ‘friend requests’ in order to capture personal information – it’s wise to be careful in how you use Facebook. Here are a few Facebook security tips to help keep you safe:

Facebook Security Tips

  • Verify every Facebook contact
Make sure that the person you’re talking to… really is the person you think they are. Try to verify their identity.
  • Protect your banking and financial information
Never disclose anything about your bank accounts, credit cards, debit cards, or other financial information on Facebook.
  • Be wary of strangers
Don’t add or accept friend requests from people that you don’t know.
  • Keep your password secure
Taking a little extra care over your password can be a vital element in your Facebook security:

    • Devise a complex password that will be difficult for others to guess
    • Ideally, your password should use a mixture of letters, numbers, and symbols
    • Remember to change your password frequently
    • Don’t use the same password for Facebook and other websites. If the security of your password is compromised on one site, it may then be used to access your Facebook account
  • Secure your computer, your mobile devices, and your data
Install a rigorous anti-malware solution on your computer, smartphone, and tablet – to protect your devices against the latest computer viruses, worms, Trojan viruses, and other threats.

5 Tips to Stay Safe on Internet

COMPUTER TIPS, INTERNET, SAFTY TIPS, WEBSITE
As the Internet becomes an increasingly integral part of daily life, questions about privacy and security on the Internet are on the rise. Keeping your personal information, private data and finances safe can be difficult, but by following a few tips, you can avoid the vast majority of scams, spyware and privacy breaches.

Tip 1. Be Aware

The best tool to avoid spyware and stay safe on the Internet is your own brain. Free software with no potential upgrades or strings attached, websites that are covered in flashy ads, and free Wi-Fi in an unexpected place are all signs that something may be wrong, and ignoring that intuition can get you in trouble. By staying aware of what you are doing, and thinking about your security while you live your online life, you stand a better chance of avoiding potentially dangerous situations.

internet safetyTip 2: Check for website safety

The Internet can be dangerous because so many websites require your personal information to either log in to your account or to complete a transaction. Hackers, thieves and spyware programmers realize this and often try to intercept your information during these transactions, so make sure you are always dealing with secure websites and companies. First, only provide your information to reputable businesses, then ensure that the company’s website uses a Web address that starts with “https” and has a padlock symbol either in the address bar or at the bottom of the browser. This means that the site encrypts your information, making the data nearly useless to any thieves or hackers who may intercept the transmission.

Tip 3: Choose strong and varied passwords

For most people, a password is the strongest protection to ward off hackers and thieves, and yet so many choose passwords that are barely worth the time it takes to enter them. When creating a password, always use a mix of letters and numbers, and include a symbol if the website allows it. While more difficult to remember, this will make your password almost impossible to guess.

More importantly, you have to use different passwords for different websites. Think about how often you use the same username and password for many online accounts. Hackers specifically target low-security sites to gain access to large lists of usernames and corresponding passwords, knowing that many people use the same combination of credentials for things like online banking.

Additionally, take advantage of any two-factor authentication offered by these sites. This requires not only a password to log in, but a code that’s sent to a dedicated device or to your smartphone as an SMS message. This makes it very difficult for a third party to hack into your account.

Tip 4: What is spyware? How do I stop it?

Spyware probably poses the biggest threat to privacy and security on the Internet, yet so few people really know what it is or how it works. Put simply, spyware is any piece of software that records your actions or information without your knowledge. Some spyware is fairly benign, tracking browsing history and keeping the data it receives anonymous, while other spyware is specifically designed to get your online banking credentials so thieves can clean out your accounts.

Because it’s almost impossible to avoid spyware on your own, having anti-spware and antivirus programs running on your computer is a must. These programs will automatically scan any piece of incoming software for malicious signatures and block the installation if the program looks suspect. They’ll also scan existing files and monitor Internet traffic to ensure that spyware isn’t hiding somewhere on the machine and sending your information to some hacker’s terminal.

There are free anti-spyware programs out there, but you have to be careful when trying to save a buck or two — quite a few of these programs are really Trojan horses in disguise, looking to infect your machine instead of protect it. Instead, your best option is to go with an industry leader. These companies have no interest in scamming you, and are big enough to ensure that their databases are constantly updated as new threats emerge. The best options also offer a free trial, so you can see the anti-spyware program in action before paying some of your hard-earned cash.

Tip 5: It’s not all about spyware and scams

With all this talk about spyware, hackers and Internet security, it’s important to remember that most people with privacy issues on the Internet put themselves in that position. Think about social networking sites and just how much personal information you have posted there. If someone were trying to steal your identity and needed your father’s middle name or where you went to elementary school — two commonly used security questions — you need to think about how a thief could locate those facts. If you’re concerned about Internet privacy, you have to consider staying away from social networking sites, minimizing the information you put out there, or maximizing privacy settings on these sites.

Complete privacy and security on the Internet is a tough goal to reach, these tips will help you go a long way toward keeping yourself safe. Millions of people use the Internet, and thieves will inevitably go for easy targets. People who give even the smallest amount of thought to security and privacy, and take steps in that regard, will find themselves passed over as thieves search out greener pastures.

Download Wikipedia to Read Offline

EDUCATION, INTERNET, WEBSITE

Download Wikipedia content on your computer to read full Wikipedia offline for free wherever you are in the world. Wikipedia officially makes available free database dumps for personal use, thereby making it easy for interested readers to download the full Wikipedia content and browse it offline.

I am sure that many of us love to read the comprehensive information provided by Wikipedia, an authoritative resource on every topic compiled by voluntary editors and contributors. But downloading Wikipedia database dumps and processing them for reading is not as simple as it sounds, and specialised Wikipedia readers make the task easier. Simply download complete Wikipedia on your computer and its easy to spend reading time on your next long flight.

Download Kiwix Wikipedia reader

To get started, download the most popular Wikipedia reader Kiwix, an open source free software for reading web content offline and is specially recommended for reading Wikipedia content offline. First you can start by downloading the version of Kwix for your operating system like  Mac, Windows, Linux and more. I chose to download the Windows version on my computer.

kiwix-install

and here is what the start-up screen looks like.

kiwix-wikipedia-reader

Download Wikipedia ZIM Files

Then you need to download the full Wikipedia .ZIM file which contains all the articles of Wikipedia to the particular date mentioned on the download files. ZIM files are an standardised open format to store wiki content for offline use.

wikipedia-zim

These files are frequently updated and right now I can see to English versions on the website. You can download an older version since 2010 which has 45,000 articles with pictures (3.7GB), or download the latest full version which contains all Wikipedia articles till January 2012, but contains no pictures to reduce the download size. I decided to download the latest January 2012 version, but it was a huge 9.7 GB download file! Pre-indexed ZIM files and the Kiwix Wikipedia reader are also available for combined download (9.2GB). You can download the bittorrent versions of these files also.

If those huge downloads seem too time-consuming for your broadband Internet connection, you can choose to download smaller versions of the Wikipedia which might be more useful to your needs like the simple English Wikipedia (730MB), 6000 child friendly Wikipedia articles (2.6GB), or the 30,000 best Wikipedia articles (2.3GB). They are available in the other section below the links.

wikipedia-resources

After you install the ZIM file, you can get started with the Kiwix Wikipedia reader.  I installed the simple English Wikipedia, a 730 MB download which came in under half an hour on an 8 MBps broadband connection.

download-zim-file

Read Wikipedia Offline

In Kiwix, Click Open File, load the ZIM file and the entire Wikipedia content loads instantly. The software will ask you to index all content for faster searching, and you should enable that option.

browse-wikipedia

Their screencast video shows you how you can use the Kiwix reader to browse Wikipedia articles offline, search for content and find your needed information quickly and easily.

I hope you download Wikipedia easily after using this tutorial and like me get ready to read Wikipedia offline on your laptop during the next long air travel, and make good use of your time and expand your knowledge.

Simple Wikipedia for Students

EDUCATION, INTERNET, WEBSITE

Have you ever read the Simple English Wikipedia? It is different from the English Wikipedia you would normally visit. Wikipedia contains in depth authoritative articles on possibly every popular topic in the world, but sometimes it is difficult for children, students and people with poor English to comprehend.

Simple English Wikipedia

The Simple English Wikipedia is a subpart of the main Wikipedia itself and was designed specifically for the purpose of simplicity – and when you might just not need so much information.

Just compare this article about Javascript on Wikipedia and Simple Wikipedia. Notice the difference in length and complexity of article.

wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JavaScript
http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Javascript

The main highlight is shorter sentences and more use of easier grammar. The use of basic English is encouraged here. Simple English Wikipedia is targeted for use by children, students, and people learning English. It helps them understand common topics of interest in an easy to understand language.

Right  now there are over 100K articles in the Simple English Wikipedia, compared to over 4.5 million articles in Wikipedia. Similar to Wikipedia, people can edit wiki pages to improve and create new pages on Simple English Wikipedia.

There are some amazing encyclopedia articles there which children will find easier to understand –  do give it a try.

Best Free Online Image Editors to Edit Images Online

INTERNET, TOOLS

Most of the people associate image editing with downloadable image editors, like Paint.net. However, lately many online image editing applications have come up that let you edit images online, without a need to download any software on your computer.

I have tried many such online image editing applications, and am quite surprised to see all the advanced features that they offer. After you start using an online image editor, you might not feel a need to go back to other image editing applications.

Here are 5 of the best free online image editors that I have come across:

1) SumoPaint

SumoPaint online image editor really surprised me. I was really astonished to see the number of features this this free online image editor provides. And on top of that, how easy it makes it to use them.

When you open SumoPaint, you will immediately see a vertical toolbar with all the commonly used tools. There is a color picker on the right side. Apart from that, there is a menu bar at the top that groups functions.

SumoPaint-300x216

Doesn’t this portrays the picture of a downloadable image editor? That’s the strength of SumoPaint. The interface is so intuitive that you will immediately know how to use it.

Some of the advanced features it provides includes support for layers, option to edit images that you already have, and options to save your images to your computer, or to your Sumo Account.

All you need to use this free online image editor is a browser, and it actually works on most of the browsers. I tested it on Google Chrome, Firefox, and IE, and it works like a charm.

2) Splashup

Splashup is another free online image editing application, that is lot similar to SumoPaint. It also comes with an easy to use interface, and advanced features like Layers, and pixel level control.

Apart from that, Splashup also lets you open your images from other online applications like Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, Smugmug, PhotoBucket, and any URL. Apart from that, you can also save your images to these websites.

I found Splashup a bit more difficult to use as compared to SumoPaint, as it automatically creates layers for everything, which was a bit difficult for me to get used to. However, if you have experience with layers, this will be very useful for you.

3) GfxEditor

GfxEditor is one of the most advanced image editing applications. It comes with all the features that you need for editing your images. Apart from editing images, you can also use GfxEditor as a full fledged Desktop Publishing application.

GfxEditor-300x221

Another great feature of GfxEditor is that you can get merchandise created with your images. This is a very good gifting idea.

However, GfxEditor consumes lot of your computer memory, and in fact has an indicator to show when it might be using too much memory. On top of that, the interface might look overwhelmed for casual users. For advanced users, they would find interface quite useful.

4) Pixlr

Pixlr is another easy to use free online image editor. The interface is as intuitive as applications like SumoPaint, and Splashup. I really like some of the features in Pixlr. For example, when you start typing text, a specific toolbar for text comes up that lets you change font, font size, and text color. This is one of the many very thought of features.

Pixlr-450x330

It comes with Layers, filters, and various adjustment options to edit images. You can open an existing image from your computer, or from a URL, and save the image back to your computer, or to Pixlr itself.

5) FotoFlexer

FotoFlexer is more of an online photo editor, than image editor. It lets you quickly edit your photos online. You can upload photos from your computer, pull them from websites like Myspace, Photobucket, Facebook, Picasa, Flickr, Smugmug, and more.

A great feature of FotoFlexer is that you can even capture a photo directly using webcam. Just attach your webcam to your computer, and capture photo directly from within FotoFlexer.

Some of the photo editing features provided by FotoFlexer include: Red eye removal, add various effects, remove distortion, add animation to photos, beautify photos, and much more.

The major flaw with this online photo editing website is that it adds watermark to your photos. However, the watermark is not so prominent, and is instead quite stylish and might look like an addition effect added to the photo.

This online photo editor is quite similar to Cloudphotoeditor that I reviewed earlier. This online image editor does not have frames or glitter stamp, but it provides an interesting PIP effect (Picture in Picture Effect), which is quite rarely found amongst photo editors.

BROWSER, Chrome Extension, INTERNET

Images are easier to view, especially if you have an older device that doesn’t and cannot support PDF documents, there’s no apps. Reading PDF documents in these types of situations requires you to convert them into a different file format first, and that’s exactly what the following apps and extensions for Chrome can do, convert PDF into images.

So lets look at these extensions and apps in details.

PDF to Image Converter

First app that we’re gonna talk about is called PDF to Image Converter and it has two work modes.

First it can be used as an image extractor. This is useful if you have a PDF document with embedded images. This tool will scan the PDF document and extract images out of it. The page scanner on the other hand will take an entire page, doesn’t matter what it’s made of, and it will convert it into images that you can afterwards download either individually (1 image for 1 page) or all at once. JPEG image format is supported.

You get a preview of the converted document after which you’ll be able to download it as a compressed archive. Each page is gonna be converted into its own image. Images can be JPEG with 3 different levels of quality. Setup is very simple and straightforward, it shouldn’t be an issue. Simply select the PDF document that you’d like to see converted and wait for PDF tools to do its thing.

Online PDF Tools

Online PDF Tools is actually a set of PDF tools for editing and processing PDF files. You get a converter that converts any file (document) into PDF, PDF merge tool, PDF rotate tool.

What interests us, the PDF to JPEG tool can be seen in action on the image above. Notice that a very long list of formats is supposedly supported, but we discovered that there’s no way to select any of the mentioned image formats, only JPEG is supported. After loading up a PDF document, you’re gonna have to wait a bit until the file is processed. Waiting time depends on the size of the file. Once the conversion finishes you’re gonna be taken to the converted image file.
