How to watch videos slow motion in YouTube

The YouTube video player lets you easily change* the playback speed of videos. You can watch a YouTube video in slow motion and see the frames in more detail or, if the video is boring, you can switch to fast motion mode and skim through the video by doubling the playback speed.

YouTube is home to countless eye-popping videos, everything from epic outfield catches to freaky car crashes to seemingly impossible dance moves.
Indeed, for the past couple days I’ve been watching, and rewatching, this video and trying to figure out how a person’s legs and feet can move that way. (It gets especially amazing around the 1-minute mark.)

Bottom line: there are times when it would be great to see a video in slow motion. YouTube offers this option, but it’s not exactly out in plain sight.

To adjust playback speed if you’re using the Chrome browser, click the Settings icon in the lower-right corner of the playback window, then click the Speed selector. Choose 0.25 for quarter-speed playback or 0.5 for half-speed. (Obviously you can also opt for faster playback if you wish.)

Don’t see that option? While I found it in Google Chrome, it wasn’t visible in either Firefox or Internet Explorer. However, you should still be able to access it in those browsers by enabling the HTML5 version of YouTube’s video player (click “Request the HTML5 player”), or by using the site discussed below.

Play YouTube Videos in Slow Motion

Method 1#: YouTube HTML5 Video Player

As I said earlier YouTube HTML5 player is not available by default for the viewers, but you can get it easily by following the below link. Once you visit the link click Request the HTML5 player and instantly your default video player will be changed to HTMNL5 player. Now search and open any video, click on Gear icon (bottom right) and choose speed. Below is the same in steps by step procedure.

Step 1: Go to http://www.youtube.com/html5

Step 2: Click on Request the HTML5 player button and wait for few seconds until you see the button has been changed to “Use the default player”

Step 3: Now search for any video and open it

Step 4: Now click on Gear icon (bottom right)

Step 5: Next click on Speed, then select your video playing speed from 0.5 to 0.25 and you are done!

I would recommend you to use 0.5 speed, because when I chose 0.25 the video was playing in slow motion but I was not able hear the sound. You can also play video in fast motion by following the same steps, but instead of selecting 0.5 or 0.25 select 1.5 or 2 to increase the speed.

How to Change Bing Safe Search

Nowadays our kids are very familiar with  search engine  more than us, from their studies to entertainment they’re searching there. So I am going to explain how to save them from adult and irrelevant results in Microsoft Bing search engine.

How to turn off Bing Safe Search?  Bing is Microsoft’s new search engine, but the strict filters may be blocking valid text content you need to surf. How can you change the Bing safe search preferences from Strict to Moderate in India and many other countries, or turn on Strict filters in countries where the safe filter is set to moderate.

To edit the safe search preferences, you need to look at the top right corner and click Extras > Preferences.

If you do not see a safe search preference option on that page, it means Strict Safe Search is enabled by default in your region. The Strict Filter will remove all explicit text, images, and videos from your search results. Here is what typically will happen when you search for blocked terms

If you check the Google Safe search settings, they are set to Moderate Filtering by default, which means block bad images only. But the Bing settings are set to Strict if the option is not available in your country. So your text results are also filtered.

Change Bing Safe Search Settings

To change the options, you can change the country. Click on the country in the top right corner and select “United States – English”, or you can directly select US as your country. Now you can again go to Extras > Preferences and you will have the moderate safe search option selected by default, which will filter bad images and videos, but not text, from your search results.

On the other hand, if you are in the US or other countries where moderate filters are on, you can go to Extras > Preferences and change your filter to Strict, which will stop all types of offensive content in one go. This is a good idea if children are surfing the web and you do not wish to get surprised by offensive search results slipping through filters. Bing also lets you report websites with adult content, if they are entering your search results with the strict filter on.

Why Different Regional Safe Filters?

Microsoft has updated their blog on the safe search issues and informs that the filters are on by default and if you need to turn it off, you need to confirm you are over 18 years.

Update: Microsoft advises you can add adlt=strict to the end of a query and no matter what the settings are for that session, it will return results as if safe search was set to strict.

How to Lock Google Safe Search to Protect Children Online

Did you know that you can lock Google safe search, to protect your children online from searching adult content, and getting surprised by unexpected sexual search results. If your children use the same computer and browser that you do,  then it is highly recommended that you to enable and lock strict safe search, besides using a good parental control software and a filtered web browser.

Google does provide an option for strict search results, but it doesn’t serve much purpose as children can always turn off safesearch in click. Don’t think that your children would do that –  if they created an underage Facebook account, this is much easier.

So the good idea would be to apply strict search filtering, and Lock safe search with password protection of your Google account.

How to Lock Safe Search?

Proceed to the search settings icon (gear shaped), and choose search settings. In the safe search filters, choose the strict filtering option which will filter out most explicit sexual content from webpages, images and videos.

Once you decide to lock safe search, the good thing is that Google will lock this across all Google domains, so children cannot use a different Google domain name like google.in and get access to unmoderated search. Now Google will ask you for your Google account password which will lock the search results.

That’s it. Now all the Google search results will be strict filtered and will need your Google account password to unlock safe search. This is how the coloured Google balls will appear on the top right of the screen when this Google safe search is activated and locked (which parents can easily monitor from across the room).

In fact, I would also go ahead and recommend that you turn off Google instant search and show more search results instead, so that unexpected results and images don’t appear in the window below as your children continue to type their search terms.

Remember, this is just one option for parental control on Google search. Even after activating it, you will still find a lot of content which you may feel is explicit for your children, but still it is better than not having unlocked Google safe search at all.

Internet is an unsafe place, and there are hundreds of other ways in which children can access adult content and unblock websites, so you must activate parental control software on your computers. There are so many image search engines, and just blocking Google image search does not block explicit images.

5 Tips to Stay Safe on Internet

As the Internet becomes an increasingly integral part of daily life, questions about privacy and security on the Internet are on the rise. Tip 1. Be Aware

The best tool to avoid spyware and stay safe on the Internet is your own brain. Free software with no potential upgrades or strings attached, websites that are covered in flashy ads, and free Wi-Fi in an unexpected place are all signs that something may be wrong, and ignoring that intuition can get you in trouble. By staying aware of what you are doing, and thinking about your security while you live your online life, you stand a better chance of avoiding potentially dangerous situations.

The Internet can be dangerous because so many websites require your personal information to either log in to your account or to complete a transaction. Hackers, thieves and spyware programmers realize this and often try to intercept your information during these transactions, so make sure you are always dealing with secure websites and companies. First, only provide your information to reputable businesses, then ensure that the company’s website uses a Web address that starts with “https” and has a padlock symbol either in the address bar or at the bottom of the browser. This means that the site encrypts your information, making the data nearly useless to any thieves or hackers who may intercept the transmission.

Tip 3: Choose strong and varied passwords

For most people, a password is the strongest protection to ward off hackers and thieves, and yet so many choose passwords that are barely worth the time it takes to enter them. When creating a password, always use a mix of letters and numbers, and include a symbol if the website allows it. While more difficult to remember, this will make your password almost impossible to guess.

More importantly, you have to use different passwords for different websites. Think about how often you use the same username and password for many online accounts. Hackers specifically target low-security sites to gain access to large lists of usernames and corresponding passwords, knowing that many people use the same combination of credentials for things like online banking.

Additionally, take advantage of any two-factor authentication offered by these sites. This requires not only a password to log in, but a code that’s sent to a dedicated device or to your smartphone as an SMS message. This makes it very difficult for a third party to hack into your account.

Tip 4: What is spyware? How do I stop it?

Spyware probably poses the biggest threat to privacy and security on the Internet, yet so few people really know what it is or how it works. Put simply, spyware is any piece of software that records your actions or information without your knowledge. Some spyware is fairly benign, tracking browsing history and keeping the data it receives anonymous, while other spyware is specifically designed to get your online banking credentials so thieves can clean out your accounts.

Because it’s almost impossible to avoid spyware on your own, having anti-spware and antivirus programs running on your computer is a must. These programs will automatically scan any piece of incoming software for malicious signatures and block the installation if the program looks suspect. They’ll also scan existing files and monitor Internet traffic to ensure that spyware isn’t hiding somewhere on the machine and sending your information to some hacker’s terminal.

There are free anti-spyware programs out there, but you have to be careful when trying to save a buck or two — quite a few of these programs are really Trojan horses in disguise, looking to infect your machine instead of protect it. Instead, your best option is to go with an industry leader. These companies have no interest in scamming you, and are big enough to ensure that their databases are constantly updated as new threats emerge. The best options also offer a free trial, so you can see the anti-spyware program in action before paying some of your hard-earned cash.

Tip 5: It’s not all about spyware and scams

With all this talk about spyware, hackers and Internet security, it’s important to remember that most people with privacy issues on the Internet put themselves in that position. Think about social networking sites and just how much personal information you have posted there. If someone were trying to steal your identity and needed your father’s middle name or where you went to elementary school — two commonly used security questions — you need to think about how a thief could locate those facts. If you’re concerned about Internet privacy, you have to consider staying away from social networking sites, minimizing the information you put out there, or maximizing privacy settings on these sites.

Complete privacy and security on the Internet is a tough goal to reach, these tips will help you go a long way toward keeping yourself safe. Millions of people use the Internet, and thieves will inevitably go for easy targets. People who give even the smallest amount of thought to security and privacy, and take steps in that regard, will find themselves passed over as thieves search out greener pastures.

I am sure that many of us love to read the comprehensive information provided by Wikipedia, an authoritative resource on every topic compiled by voluntary editors and contributors. But downloading Wikipedia database dumps and processing them for reading is not as simple as it sounds, and specialised Wikipedia readers make the task easier. Simply download complete Wikipedia on your computer and its easy to spend reading time on your next long flight.

Download Kiwix Wikipedia reader

To get started, download the most popular Wikipedia reader Kiwix, an open source free software for reading web content offline and is specially recommended for reading Wikipedia content offline. First you can start by downloading the version of Kwix for your operating system like  Mac, Windows, Linux and more. I chose to download the Windows version on my computer.

Download Wikipedia ZIM Files

Then you need to download the full Wikipedia .ZIM file which contains all the articles of Wikipedia to the particular date mentioned on the download files. ZIM files are an standardised open format to store wiki content for offline use.

These files are frequently updated and right now I can see to English versions on the website. You can download an older version since 2010 which has 45,000 articles with pictures (3.7GB), or download the latest full version which contains all Wikipedia articles till January 2012, but contains no pictures to reduce the download size. I decided to download the latest January 2012 version, but it was a huge 9.7 GB download file! Pre-indexed ZIM files and the Kiwix Wikipedia reader are also available for combined download (9.2GB). You can download the bittorrent versions of these files also.

If those huge downloads seem too time-consuming for your broadband Internet connection, you can choose to download smaller versions of the Wikipedia which might be more useful to your needs like the simple English Wikipedia (730MB), 6000 child friendly Wikipedia articles (2.6GB), or the 30,000 best Wikipedia articles (2.3GB). They are available in the other section below the links.

After you install the ZIM file, you can get started with the Kiwix Wikipedia reader.  I installed the simple English Wikipedia, a 730 MB download which came in under half an hour on an 8 MBps broadband connection.

In Kiwix, Click Open File, load the ZIM file and the entire Wikipedia content loads instantly. The software will ask you to index all content for faster searching, and you should enable that option.

GfxEditor is one of the most advanced image editing applications. It comes with all the features that you need for editing your images. Apart from editing images, you can also use GfxEditor as a full fledged Desktop Publishing application.

If you don’t want to go through the whole process of opening the post in a separate webpage and then bookmark it, then you would be happy to know that there are two Chrome extensions that let you directly bookmark Facebook posts.

The two chrome extensions are: Facebook-Bookmark Posts and Facebook Favorite.

Facebook Bookmark Posts: This one is my personal favorite. Just add this Chrome extension and you will see the “Bookmark” Option added to posts on your Facebook. Just tap on the Bookmark option present there, to save the particular post. After you install this Chrome extension, you will be able to see a Facebook logo added to your Chrome toolbar. Tap on the logo, and you will be able to see the links of the Facebook posts saved by you.

Facebook Favorite :  Similar to the above, this one is also a Chrome extension that adds an option called Favorite to the posts. And similar to the Facebook Bookmark Post extension, this too adds a Facebook logo, which when tapped on shows you the list of the posts that has been set as favorite by you. Click on the option that says Favorite, right below your posts, to add the post to the list of favorites.

3. Clip It

Apart from the traditional ways to save your Facebook posts, there is one more way to save the those worth reading posts posted on your Facebook wall. SocioClip is a popular website that let’s you save the Facebook posts.

To save the Facebook posts via SocioClip, you need to follow these steps:

Step 1: The first step is to install the SocioClip extension for Chrome. After installing this extension, you will be able to see an option called “Clip it” added to every post that is on your Facebook wall.

Step 2: The posts that you wish to “Clip” will be saved to your SocioClip account. Therefore, first of all you will have to get a free account on SocioClip. Now tap on the option that says “Clip it” below the post and it will open a small window that will require you to fill certain details about the post. After you fill in the details, tap on the Clip it Option to save the post to your SocioClip account.

These are some of my favorite methods to bookmark Facebook posts so that I can get to them anytime I want to. There are some other complicated methods as well (like, you can share a post on Facebook, and then choose it to share the posts as a “Private Message”. That will have your posts saved in your in your Facebook inbox, till you want). But you don’t need to be bothered with those, especially when there are so simple methods available.

FMA has quite a sizeable collection of free high quality digital music, all downloadable for free. It’s backed by WFMU, the oldest freeform radio channel in the U.S. The entire music collection is selected and uploaded by FMA’s curators, who come from all parts of the globe. Free Music Archive’s web UI is quite simple and straightforward. The header consists of handy drop down menus that let you browse for and find music, either by searching through curators’ names, or by genres.

How to create Child Theme in WP

It is a must to have a Child Theme for our all customized website themes. When we’re doing customization to our theme’s it is a best practice to do in the child theme why because if you are editing the CSS or PHP files directly in the original theme all your changes will be wiped when you update the theme. So the changes in your child theme untouched by the new updates thus save your precious time and effort make peace of mind.

So in this tutorial I am going to explain by step by step how to create child theme in very simple method.

1. The first thing we need to do is create a new folder in our themes directory to hold the child theme. You can do with using cPanel or via FTP. The themes directory is wp-content/themes.

It’s important to name the folder without any space in the name, and it’s common practive to use the name of the parent theme folder with “-child” added on the end.

So for this example, we’ll be calling our folder “twentythirteen-child”.

2. In the child theme folder, create a file called style.css. This is the only file required to make a child theme.

The style sheet must start with the following lines:

3. Now we need to activate the child theme. Login to your WordPress site and go to Appearances > Themes. Find your child theme in the list of available themes and click “Activate”.

4. Your child theme should now be the active theme.

Modifying Your Theme’s CSS

Our child theme works a treat and looks just like the parent theme because we’ve imported its CSS file.

If you want to modify the theme’s CSS, you can add any changes to the child theme’s CSS file below the @import line. All new CSS information is applied to your site after the original theme’s CSS is loaded, overwriting it.

Say we want to change the text in our theme so it is bubblegum pink. All we need to do is add a line to the child theme’s CSS file:

Editing the functions.php File

The functions.php file is where a theme’s main functions are usually kept. If you need to add custom functions to your theme, you can do so by creating a new functions.php file within your child theme folder.

Unlike style.css, the functions.php file in a child theme does not override its counterpart from the parent. Instead, it is loaded in addition to – and right before – the parent theme’s functions.php.

You child theme’s functions.php file should start with a php opening tag and end with a php closing tag. You can add your functions in between.

Editing Other Theme Files

Unlike the functions.php file, the functions for your theme’s other PHP files aren’t imported automatically. Other PHP files are edited by replacing the file with a copy. The theme’s original file is then ignored and the new one is used instead.

For example, if you’re planning to make changes to Twenty Thirteen’s 404.php file, you would need to first make a copy of the old file and paste it into the child theme.

Once the file has been copied into the child theme, you can make any changes you like, safe in the knowledge you can revert back to the parent theme any time you want.
