Check if you’ve been part of an online data breach

data breach is a confirmed incident in which sensitive, confidential or otherwise protected data has been accessed and/or disclosed in an unauthorized fashion. Data breaches may involve personal health information (PHI), personally identifiable information (PII), trade secrets or intellectual property.
Forget about those hackers in movies trying to crack the code on someone’s computer to get their top-secret files. The hackers responsible for data breaches start by targeting companies, not specific individuals. They want to get data from as many people as possible so they can use, resell, or leverage it to make money. It all starts with getting your password.

You can’t stop hackers from hacking. But you can avoid bad habits that make their work easy.

Check if you’ve been part of an online data breach

All types of data can be valuable.

Some data — like banking information, bank card numbers, government-issued ID numbers, and PIN numbers — is valuable because it can be used to steal the victim’s identity or withdraw money. Email addresses and passwords are also valuable because hackers can try them on other accounts. All sorts of data can be valuable in some way because it can be sold on the dark web for a profit.

What makes a password easy to guess.

If hackers can get a list of email addresses from a data breach, they already have a good start. All they have to do is pick their website of choice and try these emails with the most popular passwords. Chances are, they’ll be able to get into quite a few accounts. So don’t use any of these 100 Worst Passwords of 2018.

  • 123456 and password are the most commonly used passwords. Don’t use them.
  • Switching a letter for a symbol (p@ssw0rd!) is an obvious trick hackers know well.
  • Avoid favorite sports teams or pop culture references. Use something more obscure.
  • Don’t use a single word like sunshine, monkey, or football. Using a phrase or sentence as your password is stronger.
  • Don’t use common number patterns like 111111, abc123, or 654321.
  • Adding a number or piece of punctuation at the end doesn’t make your password stronger.

One exposed password can unlock many accounts.

Hackers know people reuse the same passwords. If your banking password is the same as your email password is the same as your Amazon password, a single vulnerability in one site can put the others at risk.

It’s why you should use different passwords for every single account. The average person has 90 accounts, and that’s a lot of passwords to remember. Security experts recommend using a password manager to safely store unique passwords for every site.

Hackers don’t care how much money you have.

Think you don’t need to worry because you don’t have much money to steal? Hackers couldn’t care less. There are countless ways to leverage all types of personal data for profit.

Through identity theft, cyber criminals can open new credit cards or apply for loans in your name. By getting your financial information, they can make purchases or withdrawals. These attackers can even find ways to target your friends and family once they gain access to your email.

Users will see Arfie on the front page. The homepage is relatively clean and uncluttered, with a good choice of colors. The search bar is squarely in the middle of the home page, with textual tab choices right on top of that. Below Arfie, there are links to the Toolbar, Joke of the Day, SearchSpy, a way to view either family-friendly or unfiltered real-time Web searches, Maps, Weather and an option to add Dogpile Search to your site.

There’s also Favorite Fetches, with what looks to be the top six most searched for queries at any one time, although this list didn’t seem to be completely accurate (dog flu is a most searched for query?). You might find Arfie’s Most Wanted to be a better indicator of what was being searched for by the most people.

Searching with Dogpile

A test search brought back results with combined results from the various search engines and directories that Dogpile pulls from, but there is another column to the right with the question “Are You Looking For…” that had much better search queries and subsequently better results.

Users will notice buttons at the top of their search results, including “Best of All Search Engines”, “Google”, “Yahoo Search”, “MSN Search”, etc. Click on any of those buttons and search results will now highlight items that are specifically from that search engine in a column to the right.

Image Search

Dogpile’s Image Search brought back good results, including better search query suggestions.

Audio and Video Search

Audio Search test searches receive results from Yahoo Search, SingingFish, and more. Most of these audio results have a quick thirty-second preview, but quite a few of them were available full-length. The Video Search is also powered by Yahoo Search, SingingFish, and more, and was similar to the Audio Search in previews and full-length results.

News Search

News Search is sortable by relevance and date, with search results returned from sources as varied as Fox News, ABC News, and Topix. The Yellow and White Pages searches are standard, with fields to search by business name, individual name, etc. Throughout all these various searches (except for the Yellow and White Pages), the ubiquitous “Are You Looking For” feature is always there, steering users to better-worded search queries.

Meta Search Features

Dogpile’s Comparison Engines demo is a friendly introduction to how metasearch engines work, with a real-time Venn diagram to demonstrate how three different search engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN), retrieve results, and how few of them actually do overlap.

Advanced Search gives users the option to narrow your searches by exact word phrases, language filters, date, domain filters, or adult filters. There is also have the option to set search preferences, with the ability to customize default search settings.

Dogpile: A Useful Search Engine

The ability to search several big search engines and directories at the same time is not only a time-saver, but it’s useful to compare results. One of the best features of Dogpile is the search suggestions because the Suggestions can be quite a lot better than what the average searcher can come up with.

Quora Search It is different

Quora is a question-and-answer site where questions are asked, answered, edited and organized by its community of users. Its publisher, Quora, Inc., is based in Mountain View, California. The company was founded in June 2009, and the website was made available to the public on June 21, 2010. Users can collaborate by editing questions and suggesting edits to answers that have been submitted by other users.

Anonymity

Anonymity on Quora can only be used to anonymously add questions or answers. This means you are not able to do any of the following actions anonymously:

  • Upvote
  • Comment
  • Send answer requests
  • Merge questions
  • Suggest Edits
  • Edit answer wikis
  • Revert edit log operations
  • Edit a question that you didn’t ask (including the question, its details, or topics)

After you write an answer, you cannot remove or add anonymity after it’s been posted. This means that if you add your answer anonymously, it will always be anonymous, and if you add your answer publicly, it will always be public. To switch the privacy of the answer, you’ll need to delete it and re-post it.

Quora has several different ways of letting you mark and remember different kinds of things. And the methods seem to change frequently. At one time Questions could be saved for later, now it’s only Answers, and so on. You can’t save Comments at all.

Bookmark

The easiest and most effective way to bookmark anything on Quora is to use the bookmarking feature of your browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.) or an external bookmark service such as Diigo. You can create different organization schemes with folders and/or tags, and there is usually a sync feature with backup to the cloud so you won’t lose the links if you change computers.

Question Answered

One of the great parts of Quora is having a question answered by the perfect person, like a former Navy pilot who can explain what it’s like to land on an aircraft carrier, or a television screenwriter sharing the critical ingredients of a TV sitcom. However, when you have a specific question, you may not know the best people on Quora who can answer.

Request Answers is a way to connect people with questions to people who can answer them.

On a question, you’ll see suggestions for Request Answers, a list of people on Quora who can best answer a particular question.

Asking someone to answer sends them an email and a notification with the request, and they can choose to answer or pass on your request.

Since the system automatically saves from an open window, if you have two windows opened, or if you open a window after you’ve written something, it will save the content from whatever window is opened. You’ve got to be very careful when you have a second window opened. I’ve lost content a few times not realizing what had happened.

Search results for the formula are displayed after the calculation result. The caret “^” raises a number to an exponent power, and percentages are allowed (“40% of 300”).
  • Numeric ranges – A set of numbers can be matched by using a double-dot between range numbers (70..73 or 90..100) to match any positive number in the range, inclusive. Negative numbers are treated as using exclusion-dash to not match the number.

For example, !f rainforest would search for rainforest on Flickr. The full list of !bangs are on the !bang page.

Videos

For video search results, click the link Videos under the search box.

If video search results are particularly relevant for your search, they will appear automatically. (e.g. gangnam style)

If you add the word videos to your search, video search results will appear automatically no matter the search. (e.g. ocean videos)

To expand the video search results, click the grid icon at the top right of the video search results. To then collapse the results, click the X icon at the top right of the results.

Yandex the best search engine for Russia and China

Yandex is a powerful search engine that’s capable of finding the most appropriate information on the internet for your search. Yandex Panoramas Yandex is a Russian multinational technology company specializing in Internet-related services and products. It is Russia’s biggest technology company.

Start searching, it’s easy!

You don’t need to know any special search commands to use Yandex. Simply type a question in the same way you would ask a librarian or a geeky professor. For example, [what time is it?], [What is the brightest star in the northern hemisphere] or [contextual advertising on Yandex].

What’s the best way to search?

It’s best to search using several words, as it’s often hard to understand exactly what you’re looking for from a single word. For example, a search for [design] may mean you’re looking for interior design, web-design, or even landscape design! So for searches like this Yandex will find pages for all types of design.

Yandex is good at understanding and interpreting searches made up of several words. It knows when to search pages where the words are located next to each other, and when it’s sufficient to come across the words separately on the same document or webpage. In both instances Yandex will find the information that matches your search the closest. Yandex lets you take full control so be “clever” when using when creating your search.

Looking for a quote?

If you want to find a specific quote, simply put the phrase in quotation marks: [“for never was a story of more woe”]. A search phrased like this will find all the pages with the quote you require.

Looking for a specific name?

Words with capital and small letters are considered separate forms of the same word, therefore it doesn’t matter whether or not you capitalize words in the search, with the following exception. A search for [!meadows] will find all documents containing this word form (plural) irrespective of capitalization. A search for [!Meadows] will find documents or webpages where the first letter is capitalized. This is particularly useful when the common noun is the same as the pronoun, for example, [village, !Cats].

Find this specific word!

In order to ensure a specific word is included in your search (Yandex may not include all the words in your search), place a plus sign in front of it (without a space). Therefore, if you are looking for a quote from “Hamlet” you can search for [+to +be +or +not +to +be].

Here’s a little tip: you can achieve the same result by placing all the “necessary” words in quotation marks: [“to be, or not to be”].

Want to exclude a word?

Place a minus sign (without a space) in front of any words you wish to exclude from your search. For example, if you need a guide to Paris and don’t want a long list of travel agents your search should be something like this: [Paris guide -travel -agents]. Please note that any words you wish to exclude should be at the end of the search.

Enjoy! Yandex the best search engine

Bing the best search engine for Russia and China

Bing the best search engine for Russia and China alternative for Google Search which is blocked there. Bing is a web search engine owned and operated by Microsoft. The service has its origins in Microsoft’s previous search engines: MSN Search, Windows Live Search and later Live Search. Bing as you probably already know is a search engine offering from Microsoft. While people believed and still believe that it is difficult to topple Google as the dominant search engine, the Bing search engine has been gaining ground and offering on the edge functionality. So much so that many believe that the recent sidebar and ability to add background images by Google has been motivated by the popularity of such features on Bing.

As for the quality of search, the results are comparable if not better than Google’s results in most cases. In any case, you can certainly expect Bing to stay around for quite some time unlike other search engines that have tried to challenge Google.

Bing Image Match

Google has had this feature for years, but Microsoft has finally decided to integrate it into its own search engine. If you find an image on the web or have an image on your PC that you would like to “re-find” on the internet, you can use Image Match to do so.

Let us say that you have a small image that you found on the internet a while back, you could now use Bing Image Match to find a larger and high-resolution copy of that same exact image. No playing around with search key words or Boolean logic – just point Bing to your picture and you are set.

To use Bing image Match, simply head over to Bing.com and click on the “Images” tab. Then, next to the search box, you will see a button that says “Image Match”. You can either upload a file directly from your PC or paste in an existing image URL to start the search.

Bing Computations

I personally have a disdain for mathematics, which is why I love to use Bing search to perform computations. Simply head over to Bing and type in your math query to see instant results

You can type in simple equations such as “100 / 5” or “100 divided by 5” to get super-fast answers right inside Bing. The search engine now also provides a calculator that you can use to change around your math problem – not to mention, it is touch friendly.

If you type something a bit more complex into Bing such as an equation like “y=2x+1”, then you will be provided a link to instantly redirect to Wolfram Alpha; the service will be able to plot your equation and provide other data surround the input.

Bing Video Hover

While Google may have had an edge up with image search functionality, Bing is still the king when it comes to searching video content.

At times, while searching for videos on the web, it can be difficult to know if you are about to click on the correct video or a copycat. Bing eliminates any uncertainty you might have by allowing you to hover over any video and preview a short clip of it.

If you are worried about accidently playing a “naughty video”, do not worry – Bing video hover disables itself and blurs any questionable content.

In addition, when you play a video from a Bing search result, it will pop up within the page instead of taking you directly to the site. Not only does this provide an easy way to get back to your search results, but it also saves bandwidth by not needing to load an entirely new page each time.

Bing Timeline

How many times do you want to look up a famous individual? Would it not be more convenient if when you searched “Henry Ford” a timeline automatically appeared with key events throughout his lifetime? With Bing Timeline – it does.

Simply head over to Bing and perform a search for “influential or famous people” and you should be provided with a Timeline for said person. In addition, to the timeline that is displayed, you receive important stats up front including the person’s lifespan, family, and companies/organizations they may have founded.

If your son or daughter (or yourself) has an upcoming school research project, using Bing’s Timeline feature is a great way to get them going in the right direction.

Bing Snapshot

Sometimes, you want to get information before you even hit the search button. Companies have tried various ways to accomplish this, such as Google’s instant results that searches and updates the page as you type. When Google released this feature many Bing users wanted something similar, so Bing came up with their own solution – Bing Snapshot.

Bing Snapshot keeps everything a bit neater; instead of receiving entire search results for “Volca” when you are trying to search for “Volcano”, the features provides bits of information within the suggested search bar.

If you are performing a search for “Bill Gates”, Bing will automatically provide you with a small “snapshot” of basic information that you can then click on to explore more about your query. Snapshots also include quick links to points of interest, such as news, imagery, biographies, quotes, etc.

Bing Saves

Here is a feature that most of you will not know about, but do not worry – it is because it is still in beta. Bing Saves is a new idea that the Bing team at Microsoft is testing out to provide easy bookmarking.

Instead of saving your favorite bookmarks locally, you can keep them saved safe up in the cloud. To check out the new beta feature simply head to Bing.com/saves. From there, you will be able to pin a link to your favorite toolbar that will enable the ability for you to click and save a link directly to Bing. Your bookmarks can then be seen by visiting the Bing Saves section.

We are not sure exactly how useful this feature is, as most browsers including Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Firefox already have cloud backups for bookmarks. That being said, maybe you can find an excellent use for the feature.

Baidu the best search engine in China

Baidu search engine is the best and very simple search engine  very famous in China. Baidu was established in 2000 by Robin Li and Eric Xu. … Baidu has the 2nd largest search engine in the world, and held a 76.05% market share in China’s search engines market, the largest in the world, as of April 2017. In December 2007, Baidu became the first Chinese company to be included in the NASDAQ-100 index.

On top of that, Baidu’s share has consistently grown in recent months, Net Marketshare data indicates. For instance, back in March, its share was rated at 16.77 percent. Fast forward to June, and that number has risen, without any drops in between, to 18.03. That’s a growth rate of almost 1.3 percent from March to June – not bad at all, considering that Baidu’s competition consists of some of the biggest tech and web companies in the history of the world. Plus, their U.S. penetration is likely close to nil at this point.

Though Baidu is the search engine of choice for many Chinese people, the company has made moves to woo the interest of English speaking developers. Back in 2013, Baidu launched an English-language site tailored towards devs. They have even hired people away from Google, like Andrew Ng, the company’s former head of artificial intelligence.

Though Google’s search engine share easily trumps Baidu’s at this point, could we someday be saying “Baidu it,” instead?

Top Windows 10 Tips and Tricks

Now that Windows 10 is out and millions of people are already running it, let’s take a look at some of the best hidden features, tips, and tricks in Microsoft’s latest (and last) major operating system was released to the public, and between the slightly confusing upgrade policy and phased rollouts, we’ve seen that the operating system is actually quite good. Since it aims to bridge the gap between mobile and desktop devices, there’s quite a lot that’s changed, but it’s still familiar and easy to use. There are quite a lot of nifty little features added that make it easier to use, but some of them are buried under settings that we usually wouldn’t look for, so here’s a couple of Windows 10 tips and tricks that you might just find useful!

Set File Explorer To Open ‘This PC’

Windows 8/8.1 got rid of the ‘My Computer’ icon we’ve all been used to for years, but it did give you the option to place an icon that leads to ‘This PC’, which was basically the same. You can also get that icon back on Windows 10 by the following process: Right Click Desktop>Click ‘Personalize’>Click ‘Themes’>On the right side, click ‘Go to Desktop icon settings’, then click whatever icons you want to be shown on the desktop. You can then pin these icons to the Start Menu.

Instead, if you prefer not having more icons, you can simply make the ‘File Explorer’ button on the Start Menu lead to ‘This PC’. To do this, you need to:

Step 1 – Open any Windows Explorer window and click the ‘View’ tab on the top ribbon.

Step 2 – Click ‘Options’ on the extended ribbon, on the top right.

Step 3 – In the ‘General’ tab, use the dropdown menu next to ‘Open File Explorer to:’ to select ‘This PC’.

Remove Search Bar and Task View Button From Taskbar

Microsoft is betting big on their virtual assistant Cortana for all devices, and even though she’s pretty awesome, some people might not like the extra clutter caused by the Search Bar on the Taskbar. You can always just open the Start Menu and type anything to do the same. To remove it, you need to right click the Taskbar, then under ‘Search’, select either ‘Hidden’ or ‘Show Search icon’.

Similarly, the new Task View feature on Windows 10 also gets a separate button that many might not like. To remove it, again right click the Taskbar and untick ‘Show Task View button’.

Customize Command Prompt

Top-Windows-10-Tips-and-Tricks-Customize-Command-Prompt

The spartan looking Command Prompt can finally be customized in Windows 10. You can select from options like text color, background color, font, size, opacity and more. Just open the Command Prompt and right click the top bar, then select ‘Properties’.

Background Scrolling

It’s pretty annoying when a popup takes away your attention and deactivates the window you’re using so you need to click on it again to scroll through the page. Windows 10 gets rid of this problem by a feature called Background Scrolling. Now even if the window isn’t active, if your cursor is on it, you can scroll through the page. Pretty cool, right? Here’s how you enable it:

Step 1 – Go to All Settings, Devices, then Mouse & touchpad.

Step 2 – Turn on the option that says ‘Scroll inactive windows when I hover over them.’

Resize Start Menu

Windows 10 is a departure from the full screen Start Menu found in Windows 8/8.1, but if you want, you can still set it to be full screen. Now what isn’t immediately apparent is that the Start Menu can be resized as well! All you need to do is move the cursor to the edge of the Start Menu and drag it to the size you want.

Background App Manager

Top-Windows-10-Tips-and-Tricks-Background-App-Manager

Similar to Windows 10 Mobile, the full desktop version also gives you the option to restrict which apps run in the background. So you can stop say, Weather or Sports from running if you don’t need them. Simply navigate to All Settings>Privacy>Background Apps and then select which apps you want to stop running in the background.

Timed Screenshots

Top-Windows-10-Tips-and-Tricks-Timed-Screenshots

Windows 10 adds the very cool feature of taking timed screenshots. Basically you can add a small delay in seconds, after which the screenshot is taken. Just open the Snipping Tool, click ‘Delay’, select your desired delay period and then take the screenshot.

Desktop Shortcuts on Command Prompt

Customization isn’t the only feature that’s been added to Command Prompt. You can now use desktop shortcuts like CTRL + C, CTRL + V and more on it. This is an absolute godsend for someone who needs to type out a long list of commands, now you can copy paste it just like any other text.

So there you have it, small yet pretty cool and unknown features that Windows 10 has brought with it! We’ll keep updating the list if anything else comes up, so stay tuned and do let us know what you thought of the article!

How to Delete your Personal Information collected by Google

Everyone worried about our privacy and safety of our personal information which are collected by Google and other online marketing websites. Google collect our personal information and sold to many online business and advertising companies for high profits. So how to avoid our personal information going to others without our concern.

Well, Yahoo! News has the step by step instructions for “How to Download and Delete What Google Search Knows About You”:

Have you ever wondered what Google Search really knows about you? Well, now you can check, as Google has added a new feature that lets you view and download your entire search history.

Yep. Everything.

The feature, which was spotted by the unofficial Google Operating System Blog — though VentureBeat points out that the function was made available in January — gives you access to everything from what you searched for to the links you clicked on from those searches. It also shows you the addresses you’ve searched for.

I was even able to see the list of images I clicked on while searching for pictures of cats eating spaghetti. Now imagine what you’ve looked for. Oh, and clearing your browser history won’t delete this data.

But there’s no reason to panic, because in addition to being able to download your search history, you can clear it.

First, here’s how to download your history:

1. Navigate to Google’s Web and App Activity page.

Personal Information collected by Google (3)

2. Next, click the gear icon in the top-right corner of the screen.

Personal Information collected by Google (4)

3. Then select Download from the drop-down menu.

Personal Information collected by Google (5)

You’ll then receive a pop-up window warning you not to download your search history to a public computer, as it contains a large amount of sensitive information.

4. If you want to continue, click Create Archive.

Personal Information collected by Google (6)

Once your history is downloaded, you’ll receive a link in a few seconds that lets you view your data.

If you don’t want to download your data, and would rather get rid of it, you can do that as well. Of course, there are some reasons to let Google keep your search data. For one thing, it guarantees faster search results. It also ensures that Google Now has all of the latest relevant information about you. If you delete your data, your searches won’t be as tailored to your habits.

Still want to get rid of your search history? Here’s how:

Before we get started, it’s worth pointing out that if you want to keep your information hidden, you can use your browser’s privacy option, which keeps Google from saving your data — though it can still be seen by your service provider or employer.

Simply deleting you browser history won’t clear the data saved by Google, as you’re only deleting the information stored by your browser and not what’s on Google’s servers. To do that, you’ll have to:

1. Navigate to the Web and App Activity Page and click the gear icon in the top-right corner.

Personal Information collected by Google (7)

2. Select Remove Items and choose the beginning of time from the drop-down menu.

Personal Information collected by Google (1)

3.Click Remove and kiss your data goodbye.

Personal Information collected by Google (2)

That’s it. All of your search history will be deleted, and you’ll never have to worry about Google knowing about the time you looked for tickets to a Justin Bieber concert.

How can you protect yourself while online?

When sending confidential information over the Internet such as usernames, passwords, or credit card numbers only send it securely. To verify this look for a small lock (Internet browser security lock) in the bottom right corner of your browser window or next to the address bar (as shown below). If visible, this lock should also be in the locked position and not unlocked.

Internet Explorer 7.0 secure address bar
Internet Explorer 7 secure address bar

We also suggest making sure the URL begins with https as shown above.

While the lock is in the lock position, data is encrypted, which helps anyone from understanding the data if it’s intercepted. When no lock is visible or in the unlocked position all information is plaintext and if intercepted could be read. If a web page is not secure, such as an online forum, use a password you wouldn’t use with protected sites such as your online banking website.

E-mail is not encrypted

Websites should not transmit confidential data over e-mail, such as passwords, credit card information, etc. E-mail is not encrypted and if intercepted by a third-party could be read.

Be aware of phishing scams

Familiarized yourself with phishing scams and techniques, which are used to trick you into divulging your account information. Online banking sites, Paypal, eBay, Amazon, and other popular sites that require logins are popular targets.

Use a safe password

Websites that store confidential data, such as an online bank site need to use strong passwords. Also, it is highly recommended that you use a different password for each website that requires a login. If you need help remembering your passwords consider using a password manager.

Use caution when accepting or agreeing to prompts

When prompted to install any program or add-on make sure to read and understand the agreement before clicking on the Ok button. If you do not understand the agreement or feel it is not necessary to install the program cancel or close the window.

Additionally, when installing any program watch for any check box that asks if it’s ok to install a third-party program, toolbar, etc. These are never required and often cause more issues than good. Leave these boxes unchecked.

Be cautious where you’re logging in from

Business

Your place of work can install key loggers or use other methods of monitoring the computer while online. Someone who has access to this information could read these logs and gather usernames and passwords. Also, do not store any passwords in your browser if your computer is shared with other coworkers.

Wireless network

When on a wireless network realize that all information being sent to and from your computer can be intercepted and read by someone nearby. Prevent this from happening by only logging into a secure network using WEP or WPA. If this is a home wireless network, make sure it is secure.

Friends house

Be concerned when logging into an account from a friends computer. A computer or network you are not familiar with could intentionally or unintentionally log usernames and passwords. Finally, when logging into any site on a friends computer never save the password information on their browser.

Be aware of those around you

While at work, school, library, or anywhere that has people around who could look at the monitor be cautious of anyone shoulder surfing. Someone could watch you type in your password, which would give them access to your account.

If you need everything displayed on the screen to remain private, consider a privacy filter for the display.

Update Internet browser plugins

Often many attackers find security vulnerabilities through browser plugins such as Adobe Flash. Make sure all installed Internet plug-ins are up-to-date.

Secure saved passwords

Make sure to store passwords and login information in a secure area. Never write login information on a sticky note or in a text file that is not encrypted.

To save your passwords we recommend using a password manager, which stores all login information and securely encrypts and password protects that information.

When saving password information in a browser, it may be visible by anyone who has access to your Internet browser. For example, without a master password setup in Firefox anyone can see all stored passwords.

Use a third-party service to confirm the safety and security of a page

We recommend the free Web of Trust (WOT) tool to verify the safety of all websites on the Internet.

Top Internet tips and tricks

Here is a list of best top internet tips and tricks can used in our daily internet activities.

A new tab can be opened by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking the link or if you have a mouse with a wheel press down on the wheel to use it as a middle mouse button to open the link in a new tab.

Use Internet search engines to their full potential

Get the most out of every search result. If you are not finding what you want try surrounding the text in quotes. For example, searching for ‘computer help’ without quotes returns results with “computer” and “help” anywhere on the page. However, if you search for “computer help” with the quotes it only return pages with “computer” and “help” next to each other.

Tip: In every search box you can press enter instead of using the mouse to click the Search button.

Box.net provides online data storage, and collaboration. Cloud-storage service Box already beats the likes of Dropbox and SkyDrive by offering 10GB of free storage to anyone who signs up for a personal account. (Those two competitors give you just 2GB and 7GB, respectively.)

Simple, Secure Sharing

Box lets you quickly and easily work securely with anyone – even if they’re outside your firewall. Share large files, view and comment on any kind of document, and connect with co-workers – no matter what device they use.

Microsoft SkyDrive is changed to OneDrive

OneDrive is the new Microsoft SkyDrive. Apart from the name change, a couple of new features have also been added. Now, documents that you share with people (like spreadsheets etc.) with other OneDrive users can be edited in real time by multiple users – you can actually see the changes being made by other users on your document while the document is open in your web browser. This is a much welcome feature that was never present on SkyDrive earlier. Teamwork becomes much easier with this update.

Alright, let’s talk about the stuff that has changed, and the stuff that hasn’t changed in more detail.

Microsoft SkyDrive is changed to OneDrive (1)

The name change…

I did a bit of research online, and it’s actually pretty funny to know why Microsoft suddenly decided to change the name of SkyDrive. Microsoft was actually sued by Sky TV provider in the UK for breaching its trademark, and following a high court ruling, it was decided that because of breaching BSkyB’s trademark rights, Microsoft had to rename the service or shut it down. Well apparently Microsoft promised to change the name within a reasonable period of time, and that’s what happened.

So why the name OneDrive? I don’t really know, but maybe it has got to do something with offering the capability to store all kinds of documents into one location or one drive – hence OneDrive. Maybe it’s also because of the new “One” line of products that Microsoft has been bringing up- like the Xbox One. But who really knows!

What has changed?

+ The name, of course.

+ A small change, but now you can change your status from Available to Invisible from the Drive page itself. See below screenshot when I click my name on the top right, I get the options to change my status.

Microsoft SkyDrive is changed to OneDrive (1)

+ You can now chat with online users from OneDrive itself. Click on the message button, and a chat box opens up at the right side of the screen. This box also allows you to link your Facebook, Skype etc. accounts to chat with people online on those accounts. Pretty neat feature, so you can chat with your Facebook friends while still staying inside the OneDrive interface! The below screenshot illustrates the chat box.

Microsoft SkyDrive is changed to OneDrive (2)

+ People can edit your documents in real time! Also, people with non Microsoft accounts can be invited to edit the documents in real time. Now with this feature, Microsoft has really killed Google Drive as Google Drive only allows editing documents by people who have an account on Google. See the screenshot below to know how people can be invited to edit a document.

image_Microsoft SkyDrive is changed to OneDrivethumb41

The above box appears when you choose to share your document. Click Share after adding the email id.

+ With the new OneDrive, it’s incredibly easy to allow people even without email ids to edit your document. For this, click on Get a Link in the above screenshot towards the left. Just ask the person who wishes to edit to copy and paste that link in the browser, and he’ll be able to edit the document. Make sure that the option to allow editing is checked before you click Generate Link.

Well, this pretty much sums up the new features.

Real time collaboration…

To demonstrate this feature, I opened up two browser windows, and I input some text in the right window and some in the left. I could see exactly where the other person’s cursor was, and what’s more, I could actually see the letters being typed in the window where I wasn’t actually typing anything. This shows the true advancement in real time editing technology that Microsoft has implemented in the new SkyDrive, or should I say, the OneDrive.

What hasn’t changed…

+ The interface is the same.

+ You get the same 7 GB of signup storage space.

Platforms supported…

Apart from the standard web browser support, the app has made its way on the Android Play Store and the iOS App Market. An update for the preinstalled SkyDrive App is on the way for Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone OS.

Ballloon (yes, with an extra l) is an amazing Google Chrome extension that lets you save all kinds of images, PDF files, hyperlinks etc., to Cloud Storage service accounts with just one click. If you open any webpage and come across a file or image, just right click on it to save it directly to your cloud storage account (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.). The file does not even need to be downloaded to your PC to be saved to your cloud storage. In fact, if the file is large, you can just click on it to start the transfer process, and then even if you shutdown your PC, the file will be transferred to your cloud storage directly. There are no intermediate save locations, no extraneous permissions, or anything of that sort. Just one click, and it sends off the file to your cloud storage account.

Ballloon basically works by adding hover-over icons over images and relevant options to the right-click context menus of hyperlinks and PDF files. These can be then used to directly save these files to your cloud storage accounts. You can even change the default location Ballloon uses to save stuff to your cloud storage accounts. It practically works with any online image, hyperlink or PDF file link out there. Currently, Ballloon works with Google Drive and Dropbox, with support for OneDrive and Box coming soon. Sounds like something you could use? Head past the break to find out more.

Ballloon: Installation And Setting Up Your Cloud Accounts

Adding Ballloon to Google Chrome is just like adding any other Chrome extension. All you have to do is search for Ballloon in the Chrome web store (or click here), and click Add. Once you do that, a little balloon icon shows up in Chrome’s icon bar. However, you still need to do a little work before things get working. Here’s a step by step tutorial:

Step 1: Before you can start using Ballloon, you need to set up your cloud storage accounts to work with it. To do that, firstly you need to log-in via your Google account. Doing so is really simple, and all you have to do is enter your Google Account credentials and authorize Ballloon to access your account. Pretty standard stuff in here.

Step 2: Once you’re logged in via your Google Account, Ballloon’s extension icon changes from Grey to Blue. This extension icon provides one click access to all the settings related to your Ballloon account. Apart from this, it also shows some cool stuff, like random (and awesome) photos from artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, access to your cloud settings, user feedback, files scheduled for your cloud (called departures) and things like that. Pretty cool if you ask me.

Step 3: Next up, you need to configure your cloud storage accounts (Google Drive and Dropbox) to work with Ballloon. To do so, simply click the extension, horizontally scroll to the cloud settings section and click on it. You should get a screen like this:

Step 4: As illustrated by the above screenshot, the screen above lets you connect your Dropbox and Google Drive accounts to Ballloon and configure the default folder used by it to save stuff to your cloud storage accounts. Connecting your Dropbox and/or Google Drive accounts to Ballloon is extremely easy, and just involves the standard API authorization. Once the access is granted, your cloud storage account details show up.

Saving A Web Hosted Image:

Once you do that, you’ll see two small icons (Dropbox and Google Drive) on the top right corner of the image. Check out the animated graphic below:
